Explore The Gate With Us

Opened in 2002 on Newcastle's Newgate Street, The Gate is a vast centre of entertainment in the heart of the city offering films, food, coffee and more across its spacious three floors.

We’ve put together everything you need to know about the complex so you can make your next visit as action-packed as possible.

Cineworld Cineworld

Cineworld

It’s bewildering that the Cineworld at the top of the Gate fits sixteen screens into its space, meaning that there’s a vast selection of movies showing at any time - from Hollywood blockbusters and horror movies to family-friendly flicks and everything in between. All the screens are fitted to the latest, highest standard but the cinema also boasts a Screen X - an overwhelming three-screen / 270 degree viewing experience - as well as Superscreen, a wall-to-wall, ceiling to floor 4K laser projection and 4DX, which adds motion seats and all manner of effects from wind to snow! The seats are roomy, the refreshments counter is packed with goodies and there’s always plenty of offers and membership options to take advantage of.

MOJO MOJO

MOJO

Opened in 2023, MOJO quickly made a name for itself as a boisterous, lively bar with a strong line-up of cocktails and diner-style food. The music is loud (classic guitar rock across four decades is the brief), the cocktail menu is LONG (more than 100 options, including lots of mocktails), and there are wings, burgers, waffles and the rest all day long. MOJO has televised sports, bar games and lots of packages too – hen nights, bottomless brunches, cocktail masterclasses and more.

CTRL Pad CTRL Pad

The CTRL Pad

Promising more than 500 arcade games from 30 years of innovation and excitement, the CRTL Pad was one of the first arcade bars in Newcastle and one of the most popular. From old skool vintage classics to the latest titles, from multi-player set-ups to console games, and with regular tournaments and leagues, the CTRL Pad is a must-visit destination for gamers.

Nando's Nando's

Nando’s

Taking peri-peri sauce as its basis (a Portuguese-Mozambique creation), Nando’s has expanded from its South African origins to become one of the biggest food chains in the world (there are three locations in Newcastle alone). Offering take-out and a restaurant, Nando’s is obviously mostly about the chicken – in numerous permutations – but there are all sorts of other options too, from wraps to burgers, platters and veggie options. Just the place to satisfy your hunger before going upstairs for the latest blockbuster!

Game of Throwing

Axe-throwing has become quite the on-trend activity of late (presumably all those Vikings / Game Of Thrones shows played a part) and Game Of Throwing is a popular destination for people looking to unleash their inner berserker. After a training session with one of the fully qualified team, you and your friends are given a lane, some axes and a variety of game set-ups to challenge you as you hoy hefty weapons towards the target. There are a variety of packages available, including corporate bonding sessions (that has alarming potential!) and it could be a fun part of a day of good times at The Gate.

The WonderBar The WonderBar

The WonderBar

Locally owned bar The WonderBar has had a central position in The Gate since 2019 and aims to be a welcoming, inclusive venue with a broad appeal. It prides itself on its varied line-up of entertainment and activities: there’s lots of live music, a club space, a restaurant and its home to everything from darts to one of the city’s largest screens for sports. From a weekly student night to regular rock’n’roll bingo and pub quizzes, there’s always something going on, and the regularly revised bar menu offers a globe-trotting selection of pub favourites. It’s popular with the pre-match crowd too!

Aspers Casino Aspers Casino

Aspers Casino

Aspers is a modern casino with a lot to offer beyond the gambling: the Gate branch has a relaxing bar, Freya’s, to enjoy a drink or grab a bite while watching the games or all the biggest sporting events on the 4k screens. There are lots of drinks offers and menu is a tempting selection of bar classics from steak and chips to pizzas. There are 20 slot machines and 60 electronic gaming terminals – all with full valet service – and of course there are the table games casinos are famous for: Aspers has dozens of tables offering roulette, blackjack and poker. The website even has tutorial videos so you can work out what you’re doing before you start spending money!

Pizza Hut Pizza Hut

Pizza Hut

Pizza Hut was one of the first big fast food chains in the UK – the first branch opening in 1973 – and is the only company to deliver pizza to an astronaut! If you want to eat like Yuri Usachov, The Gate outlet is a fine place to fuel up on doughy goodness before catching a movie or throwing an axe. The menu is packed with flavours and they've got a great Buffet Deal before 3pm each day with all the pizza, pasta and salad you can eat!

Starbucks Starbucks

Starbucks

Right opposite the Cineworld entrance you’ll find a branch of Starbucks, so you can ingest the vast quantities of caffeine necessary to make it through some of the increasingly lengthy Hollywood movies on offer. From regular coffee like espressos and cappuccinos through to more modern options like frappucinos - and available in a dizzying range of variations - Starbucks knows coffee, but also offers plenty of breakfast bites, snacks and sweet treats too.

Escape

From the same team as Game Of Throwing, Escape is Newcastle’s premier exponent of these hugely popular ‘locked room’ scenarios. There are two branches – the other is on Grainger Street – and The Gate incarnation offers two worlds to explore: can you avoid the alien on your crashed ship in First Contact? Or the robot cowboys in the Westworld-style set-up of Dead Man’s Hand? Either way, you have to battle with a series of puzzles and logic games to get out within 60 minutes or meet your dreadful fate!

The Mayfair The Mayfair

The Mayfair

Named for the legendary and much-missed music venue that once lived on the same site, The Mayfair is a sports bar par excellence and an all-round nightspot too. With more than 10 big screens and access to all the big events, including premiership football, you don’t need to miss any of the action and there are always plenty of matchday promotions. All this plus some fine bar food and DJs at the weekends.

YuMe World YuMe World

YuMe World

The second of The Gate’s arcade bars is YuMe, a riot of colour and bleeps on the second floor. Feeling very much like a cutting edge Tokyo games emporium, YuMe World offers dozens of attractions – arcade games of course, but also VR titles and activities. Play Mario Kart, Dance Dance Revolution and House Of The Dead until your thumbs seize up! There are group packages and student discounts and the arcade is open from 11am to 10pm every day.

The Keel Row The Keel Row

The Keel Row

One of the many branches of Wetherspoons in the city, The Keel Row offers everything you’d expect: a wide range of well-kept beers and plenty of spirits, cocktails and shots; a lengthy food menu from burgers to curry, breakfasts to pub favourites – all at bargain prices; and plenty of offers, promotions and other attractions that make The Keel Row an affordable option when you’re out and about!

The Gate has so much to offer you could spend a whole day in there and never get bored. Enjoy some lunch, play some arcade games, chuck axes around, grab a coffee and watch a movie, maybe try your luck at poker too - a city's worth of entertainment without having to leave the premises.
