The Blue Light Card is a genuinely brilliant innovation, a discount service for those people working on society’s front line – the emergency services, NHS and social care workers and the armed forces.

There are millions of Blue Light members in the UK with thousands of companies offering all kinds of well-deserved discounts, and the scheme is getting bigger all the time.

Here in Newcastle city centre, there are tonnes of great businesses where members can use their Blue Light Card and we've gathered together some of the best - from discounts on dining to shopping and having fun.

Food & Drink

Restaurants are among the biggest contributors to the Blue Light offer, and Newcastle has plenty, with both chains and local businesses taking part.

Pizza Express in Eldon Square offers 20% off all food from Saturday to Thursday when dining in (drinks and takeaway aren’t included), so you can tuck into some really tasty Italian food knowing you’re saving a significant sum.

Another chain with a great Blue Light deal is Las Iguanas on Grey Street, where you can get 20% off from Sunday to Friday and take a trip all over the menus of South America while saving £££. Make sure you collect the discount code online before you set out.

Turtle Bay Turtle Bay

Another restaurant taking you somewhere spicy and tasty is Turtle Bay, where you can also get 20% off the food part of your bill (including their legendary bottomless brunch) any time day or night, as long as you use the Turtle Bay app. So whether you fancy curry goat, some jerk or a veggie sharing platter, head to Turtle Bay and get your fix while saving a few pennies too.

Chaopraya is one of the finest Thai joints in town, with a menu full of unusual but tasty delights, so the fact they offer a 10% discount is excellent news. The offer applies Sunday to Thursday on their a la carte food, so that massaman curry is just waiting for you at Eldon Square.

Meanwhile, over at Old Eldon Square, you'll find Wagamama dishing up everything from bao buns to gyoza - and offering a tasty 20% off your bill for you and five guests (valid between Sunday and Thursday) while they're at it too.

Nearby Newgate Street steakhouse Bar & Block offers a whopping 25% off certain menus, meaning you can get your favourite cut of beef served exactly like you want it with a big saving.

Also on Newgate Street, Little Cosmo is a great destination for a wide range of international cuisines, with a remarkable all-you-can-eat buffet boasting dishes from all over the globe. Their Blue Light offer gives you 10% off your food bill so the world is your oyster!

If you want to stay somewhere luxurious AND enjoy a great, cheap meal, the Blue Light discount at Vermont Hotel can help with that too! There’s up to 20% off selected rooms on top of the food and drink discount.

Experiences

Blue Light discounts can apply to activities and experiences too, for example Newcastle’s magnificent Life Science Centre offers 20% off entry tickets on production of your discount card.

Less edifying but a whole heap of fun is Junkyard Golf Club, the neon-lit crazy golf experience on Newgate Street. Your Blue Light Card gets three of you in from £6, from Sunday to Thursday.

And sticking with all things golf, Mr Mulligans – also on Newgate Street - offers 10% off for cardholders. And that means adventure golf, pool, beer pong and more, as well as the restaurant and bar.

If all that fun leaves you thinking you should get in shape, Pure Gym can help with that. Blue Light Card holders can sign up for no charge and enjoy exclusive discounts off select memberships of one of the most established gym chains in the country.

Alternatively, if you fancy learning some of the Toon’s history, then you can grab discounted tickets to Newcastle Castle and explore the rugged fortress. Plus, your ticket will be valid for a whole year after purchase, so you can re-visit as many times as you like.

Fancy a challenge? EXIT Newcastle offer 10% off their games for NHS workers – just remember to bring your I.D. along with you, and escape the room before time’s up!

Shopping

Another way your Blue Light card can help your purse or wallet out is when you’re shopping, with a large variety of stores offering discounts to card holders.

New Look – a key destination for affordable high street fashion – offers 15% off for New Look branded products, both online and at their Eldon Square store, so it’s definitely worth checking out! Also in Eldon Square is River Island, where your card gets you 10% off everything from summer frocks to men’s suits so you can get set for summer on a budget.

Office Eldon Square Office Eldon Square

Once you’ve got your outfits sorted, you’ll want the right footwear, so get down to fellow Eldon Square outlet Office where you can get 10% off everything with your Blue Light membership, so those new kicks or work shoes are almost within your grasp. But if you can’t find the perfect pair there, head to Schuh, where you’ll also enjoy 10% off your next sneakers, slippers or stilettos!

And once you’ve got your look right, you want to smell right too. Right? So praise be for The Fragrance Shop, where a Blue Light card gets you 15% off online and in-store, including perfumes, colognes and gift sets.

Everybody appreciates the amazing work that people in the emergency services, health sector and armed forces do for the community and it’s genuinely commendable that so many businesses are getting involved with the Blue Light scheme – a simple and effective way to say thank you to all the nurses, paramedics, social workers and the rest for everything they do. And if you’re a card holder yourself, hopefully this will help you get the most from your membership when you're out and about in Newcastle.

Please note that terms and conditions vary greatly between Blue Light Card discount offers, so do check the relevant websites to make sure you understand the offer. Find out more at www.bluelightcard.co.uk
