Everything You Need To Know About The Sunshine Run

Last updated:

The Sunshine Run is back on the 15th June and we can't wait!

As we countdown with less than a month to go, we caught up with Fundraising and Events Coordinator, Erin Todd, for a quick Q&A on everything you need to know about this legendary run!

What is the Sunshine Run?

The Sunshine Run is a 5k race in aid of the Chronicle Sunshine Fund, a North East based charity who support children with disabilities and terminal illness by providing life-changing, specialist equipment and emotional support which is not available from the NHS or local authorities. We have also introduced a junior 3k wave for runners aged 13-18 for the first time ever this year.

Where and when is it taking place?

Newcastle Quayside, Wednesday 15th June from 6pm.

Do I need to register online, or can I just turn up?

We encourage everyone wanting to take part in the race to register online prior to the event. All pre-registered runners are guaranteed a Sunshine Run vest and medal of participation at the end of the event. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee a t-shirt or medal to runners who sign up on the night, however, you will be able to register on the day if you need to!

Why should I get involved in the 2022 event?

The Sunshine Run was postponed in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic, so we couldn’t be more excited that it is back for 2022. We are determined to make this year’s event bigger and better than ever before so there’s no better time to get involved. We have updated the course and we have introduced an all new junior 3k wave, meaning our younger supporters can get involved for the first time ever. We also have some great entertainment joining us on the night so don’t miss out!

What if I’m not a runner?

The main wave of the event is our 5k Fun Run, so you definitely don’t need to be ‘a runner’ to take part. You can complete the course however works best for you, whether that’s running, jogging, walking or even skipping!

I run for a club, is there any group rates or discounts?

We offer 10% discount to all runners associated with a running club. We also offer a discount to groups of 10 or more runners. For more information on group discounts, please contact [email protected].

What’s the difference in the waves?

The Sunshine Run will consist of 3 waves this year. The first is the junior 3k wave for runners aged 13-18. The 3k wave is perfect for junior club runners who don’t meet the age requirements for a 5k race, or for slightly older junior runners who aren’t ready for a 5k just yet! We then have our Elite 5k race, which is perfect for club and park runners, especially those working towards a PB! Our route is fast and flat, and chip-timing ensures accurate race results. Our 5k fun run wave is perfect for everyone else wanting to get involved and join Team Sunshine for our 19th Sunshine Run!

Can I bring my family?

Yes! We encourage all runners to bring their family and friends to support them across the finish line- this includes pets too!

Do I have to wear anything special to run in the event?

All pre-registered runners will be provided with a Sunshine Run vest which they can wear for the race, but we suggest wearing whatever you feel most comfortable running in. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee a t-shirt or medal to runners who sign up on the night. Top tip- don’t forget to wear your trainers in well before the race!

Is there anywhere for food and drink post-run?

There are loads of amazing restaurants down on the Quayside to get a meal or drinks after the event. We will also be providing a few little treats for all Sunshine Runners.

Do I have to raise money for the charity to take part?

We encourage all participants to fundraise for The Sunshine Run. Fundraising is not mandatory; however, it is vital to our charity and the work we do. Without the support of our generous community, we would not be able to provide the equipment and services which are so desperately needed by children living with disabilities and terminal illnesses across the North East.

We can’t wait to see you all there and any amount that you can raise for us is greatly appreciated!

What happens if it rains?

Whilst we hope for a bright and cloud-free day, British weather is nothing if not unpredictable! The Sunshine Run will go ahead even if it rains, as long as it is safe to do so!

How much is the entrance fee?

Entry fee starts at £13 for the 3k wave and £18 for the 5k wave.

Do you have any celebrity patrons?

Yes, we do, including Geordie legends Ant and Dec and Paralympic gold medal winner Stephen Miller, who will be setting off each wave of the race!

So there you have it. Everything you need to know about The Sunshine Run has been answered (we hope!). Thanks to Erin for answering all our burning questions. If you want to take a look at their social channels and website, please see below.
