Coffee on the Tyne

Whether it's the dark mornings getting the better of you, or you're just looking for somewhere cool to meet mates during your lunch break, we're all grateful for a caffeine fix or two in the cooler months! We've delved deep into some Toon history, reminding us why our city is a hub for the hot stuff!

THROUGH THE YEARS...

Coffee hit the UK during the 16th century, shipped in from across the world. As you'd imagine, Newcastle and the Quayside was the first port- of-call for many - in prime position to take advantage of the influx! Because of this, the coffee business boomed, introducing a new social scene in the city! Fast-forward a fair few years and its an industry we're still very much buying into. With coffee connoisseurs popping up all over the city, we've picked out some local roasters for your radar...

PUMPHREYS COFFEE

Established by a tea purveyor named Leigh Smith, Pumphreys Coffee was first established in the Flesh Market in 1750 and has been a Toon icon ever since! In 1983, Pumphreys took up new residency in the Grainger Market. Today, coffee-lovers can head over to the 'brewing emporium' pull up a stool and indulge in a cup of the good stuff!
