X FACTOR STAR SET TO ROCK THE NORTH EAST

An X Factor star turned rock god is unveiling his latest musical incarnation at a free North East concert this weekend. Joseph Whelan, who made it through to the judges’ house stage of the ITV talent show in 2013, will be performing with his new band, The Kontrast, at the Town Moor, Newcastle on Saturday (July 19). The alternative rock and pop band, named after Joseph’s debut solo album which reached number one in the UK Rock Charts, also features fellow X Factor contestant Nick Pendry, drummer Jake Oseland, who performed on Joseph’s top 60 UK hit, I Lie Lonely and Alex Hill, son of legendary Judas Priest bass player, Ian Hill. Saturday’s gig, part of leading LGBT festival Newcastle Pride, will mark the band’s first public performance following their recent signing with London-based Trinifold Management, which also manages rock legends Led Zepplin and The Who. Joseph said: “I’m really excited about launching The Kontrast at Newcastle Pride and we’ve prepared a special folk-inspired set to introduce the crowd to our unique sound.  I hope it will be well received and look forward to hitting the stage on Saturday.” Newcastle Pride, which runs from Friday July 18 to Sunday July 19, will offer three days of live music and entertainment, including performances by a host of other X Factor stars, including guest judge Sinitta, contest winner Shayne Ward and finalist Lloyd Daniels. A variety of top acts from across the UK and further afield will also take to the stage during the three-day event, with performances being held at both the Town Moor and Newcastle’s Times Square. Mark Nichols, Chair of charity Northern Pride, which organises the annual event, said: “The line-up for Newcastle Pride 2014 is one of the best we’ve ever had and we’re thrilled that Joseph is not only able to perform, but will be using the opportunity to unveil his new band to what we expect will be a bumper crowd.” Newcastle Pride, now in its seventh year, is free to attend, however a small number of VIP, Gold Circle and Platinum Tickets are also available to raise additional funds and offer visitors an alternative way to enjoy all the action.
