The City Tavern releases a new vegan menu

The City Tavern at Northumberland Road has long been one of Newcastle’s top spots for vegan bar meals, and now it has updated its menu with some new dishes.

Vegan diners can kick-start the day with a protein-packed breakfast burrito, filled with Linda McCartney meatballs (‘meatballs’ made with rehydrated textured soya protein, onion purée and basil), marinara sauce, grated vegan cheese, black beans, red onion and tomato. Or a full English – vegan style, with Linda McCartney sausages, scrambled tofu, grilled pitta bread and hummus.

For those looking for a little something to snack on, there are now three new vegan options on the bar bites menu. Cheesy nachos served with melted vegan cheese are joined by no-meat balls served in a marinara sauce and finally, vegetable gyoza, which are steamed Asian parcels filled with veg, tofu and soya mince. These are priced at £6.95 each.

There is also a generous selection of vegan main courses, such as a falafel wrap, black bean and mushroom enchiladas, aromatic Thai green curry and a Sunday nut roast, with prices starting at £7.95. And dessert lovers won’t miss out either, with a vegan version of the favourite Crème Brulee also on offer.

“We have always prided ourselves on being one of the first places in Newcastle to offer vegan options, and that’s something that we’ve been growing steadily over the last 18 months,” said owner David King.

“Obviously we aren’t a bar that stands still, so our team has been working hard to develop the vegan options further and now we boast what we believe is a very good menu. Since we launched it last week, we’ve had a really positive response with people coming back to try our other vegan dishes.”
