Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night Brings Regency Glamour to the Assembly Rooms This Summer

This July, the timeless wit and romance of Twelfth Night returns in dazzling style, as Theatre Space North East join forces with the historic Assembly Rooms Newcastle to present a vibrant new production set against the opulent backdrop of the venue’s iconic Chandelier Suite.

Presented in a modern verse translation by Alison Carey (in association with Play On Shakespeare), this bold reimagining infuses Shakespeare’s beloved comedy with a fresh, accessible energy—while retaining all the poetry, mischief, and emotional depth that have made it a classic for over 400 years.

Cast ashore by fate; swept away by love…

In Illyria, identities are mistaken, passions run wild, and nothing is quite what it seems. Shipwrecked and separated from her twin, Viola disguises herself and enters the service of Duke Orsino—only to find herself tangled in a deliciously complicated web of unrequited love, deception, and desire.

A Regency-Inspired Spectacle

This summer’s production brings a bold visual twist, blending Shakespeare with the high-society glamour of the Regency era—think scandal, romance, and spectacle in the spirit of Bridgerton, but with all the linguistic brilliance of the Bard.

Audiences can expect:

  • A large ensemble cast bringing Illyria vividly to life
  • The iconic comedy moments—from yellow stockings to cakes and ale
  • A richly immersive staging within the Chandelier Suite
  • A playful, accessible take on Shakespeare’s language

A Feast for the Senses

Running at approximately 120 minutes and suitable for all ages, Twelfth Night (or, What You Will) promises laughter, romance, music, and mischief in equal measure—making it a perfect summer evening of theatre.

“If music be the food of love, play on;
Give me excess of it…”
