Tyneside Cinema, Northern Film & Media (NFM) and BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art present a special Q&A screening of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey at Newcastle's Tyneside Cinema on Friday 5 December at 8pm. The screening takes place ahead of the nationwide re-release of the film, presented by the BFI as part of their Sci-Fi: Days of Fear and Wonder film season. The audience will have the chance to see Stanley Kubrick's science-fiction masterpiece on the big screen in a magnificent digital transfer from Warner Bros, and hear from an expert panel including leading 2001 expert Piers Bizony, artist Joy Cuff, who worked with Kubrick on models and sketches of the Moon for 2001, and Richard Daniels, Stanley Kubrick Archivist at University of the Arts London (UAL). Jonny Tull, Cinema Programme Manager at Tyneside Cinema said, “Nearly four decades after it was originally released in 1968, 2001 is widely considered to be one of the greatest films ever made, and one of the most influential works of science fiction of the 20th century. We’re delighted to be working with NFM, BALTIC and the BFI to present this very special screening, and really thrilled to give audiences the chance to hear from some of the country’s leading experts who have studied and worked with Stanley Kubrick.” Rupert Lee of Northern Film and Media said, “It’s a real pleasure to enable North East audiences to hear first-hand from people who know 2001 inside out – both as scholars and from direct involvement in making this amazing film. We really hope the insights they share will help inspire filmmakers at the start of their careers – and maybe inspire others who hadn’t even thought of film as a career. And it’s been great to collaborate with University of the Arts London and BFI, who have been incredibly generous in their support of this screening and the exhibition at BALTIC – a model of how to share our amazing national film resources so that audiences across the country can enjoy them.” The screening will coincide with the exhibition at BALTIC of a selection of important works relating to 2001, on loan from the Stanley Kubrick Archive at UAL and chosen by NFM and BALTIC. These items form part of They Used to Call it the Moon, a group exhibition exploring the enduring iconography of the moon in the artistic imagination. A show-and-tell event about the Kubrick items will be held at BALTIC on Saturday 6 December, chaired by BALTIC’s Curator of Exhibitions & Research, Alessandro Vincentelli. Tickets for the Q&A screening of 2001: A Space Odyssey at Tyneside Cinema on Friday 5 December cost £11-£13 (concessions £9-£11) and are available now from the Tyneside Cinema Box Office, by calling 0845 217 9909 or online at www.tynesidecinema.co.uk/2001. This screening is supported by the BFI and the University of the Arts London Archives and Special Collections Centre. They Used to Call it the Moon continues at BALTIC until Sunday 11 January 2015.
