Newcastle Institution Sachins Is Turning Back the Clock to 2000 – Including the Prices
One of Newcastle’s longest-standing Indian restaurants is celebrating 43 years in the city by bringing back a menu from the year 2000 – at its original prices.
Newcastle restaurant Sachins is turning back the clock this September, after owner Bob Arora unearthed an original Sachins menu dating back to 2000.
To mark 43 years of the family-run Punjabi restaurant, Sachins will revive dishes from the old menu for a limited two-week run – with diners able to order them at the prices printed on the menu more than 25 years ago.
The Back to 2000 Menu will launch on Monday 31 August and run until Monday 14 September at Sachins on Forth Banks, Newcastle.
The original menu offers a glimpse at just how much dining out has changed. Back then, a Butter Chicken at Sachins cost £8.95, Rogan Josh was £6.50, Palak Paneer £4.25, a Tandoori Naan £1.80 and Basmati Rice just £1.95.
And for two weeks, those prices are coming back.
The idea came about after Bob discovered the old menu and realised how many of its dishes – and the stories behind them – remain part of Sachins today.
Bob took over the restaurant in 2000 and has been at the helm for the past 26 years, but Sachins itself has been part of Newcastle’s restaurant scene since 1983.
Bob Arora, owner of Sachins, said: “Finding the old menu brought back so many memories. I took over Sachins in 2000, so seeing the dishes we were serving and what we were charging at the time was quite something.
“We’ve been part of Newcastle for 43 years now and we wanted to do something that felt like a proper celebration – not just for us, but for all of the people who have supported Sachins over the years.
“So we thought, why not actually go back to 2000? We’re bringing back the menu and, for two weeks, bringing back the prices too. I might regret saying that!”
The promotion forms part of a wider 43 Years of Sachins celebration, looking back at more than four decades of food, family and memories in Newcastle.
Sachins is also asking customers past and present to dig through their photo albums and send in photographs and memories from their visits over the years.
From birthdays and family dinners to first dates, Christmas parties and nights out, the restaurant hopes to build an archive showing the people who have made Sachins what it is.
And there’s a pretty big incentive to get digging: one winning submission will receive free Sachins for a year.
The anniversary campaign will also delve into the restaurant’s history, the family behind it and the dishes that have remained part of Sachins through generations of Newcastle diners.
Despite the nostalgia, Bob says the celebration is as much about introducing Sachins to a new generation as it is thanking those who have supported the restaurant for decades.
“There are customers who have been coming to us for years, and now we see their children and grandchildren coming in too. But there are also plenty of people in Newcastle who have never been to Sachins.
“Hopefully this gives them a reason to come and see what we’re all about – although I can’t promise we’ll keep the 2000 prices forever!”
The Sachins Back to 2000 Menu launches Monday 31 August 2026 and will be available until Monday 14 September 2026.
