Rubber Duck Race is a Quacker!

Yesterday, Sunday 7th July, saw The Cluny’s first annual Rubber Duck Race, as part of The Ouseburn Festival, and it was a quacker! 200 rubber ducks – many individually decorated and personalised by their owners – floated down The Ouseburn from behind The Ship Inn to the finish line at the bottom of The Cluny slipway, all cheered on by a throng of sun-drenched spectators. Compere Ross Lewis kept fans and competitors updated with minute-by-minute commentary on the ducks’ progress, and official race starter – not to mention Cluny manager – Julian Ive was on hand to judge the lucky winners. First prize, and the coveted Golden Duck Trophy, is winging its way to Anth Steele, whose Misfits-themed duck was adjudged to have been nearest the finish line when an unfortunate tide-reversal called for a change in the rules. As the ducks decided to head back to the starting line rather than swimming forwards to victory, the leader at that point was declared the winner! Second place received Steph’s homemade duck cake, but in the end, everyone was a winner. Last night, Julian Ive said: “Despite me having to get waist-deep in the Ouseburn, today’s Rubber Duck Race was a great success. We raised money for The Ouseburn Farm, and everyone had a brilliant time. We’ll definitely be making this an annual event!” For more information and/or hi-res photos, please contact The Cluny, on [email protected] or 0191 230 4474.
