Raise a glass to Tipsy Teas with Colonel Porter's

Located only a hop, skip and a jump from the Tyne, customers at the North East’s newest bar restaurant can now enjoy afternoon tea, with a decidedly tipsy twist.

Colonel Porter’s Emporium, at Dean Street, Newcastle, is spearheading a revival of Edwardian decadence with a lunchtime and evening menu featuring British classics such as buttered lobster, beef roly poly and sherry trifle.

Now the venue, named after Newcastle Brown Ale creator, Colonel J Porter, is turning its attention to another British tradition – afternoon tea -  with its newly launched Tipsy Teas.

Tipsy Teas, which must be pre-booked, feature a selection of finger sandwiches, lobster vol-au-vents, fruit scones with clotted cream and preserves and a variety of sweet treats including Colonel Porter’s signature rhum baba.

And, along with tea or coffee, customers can choose a glass of Champagne or a specially crafted cocktail, such as Lady Porter, made with Ketel One vodka, basil, grapefruit juice, hibiscus and lemon syrup, bitters and prosecco, or the mysteriously named Grey Lady.

Featuring Earl Grey infused Poetic License Northern Dry Gin, it also contains crème de bergamot, lemon marmalade and syrup.

Rum is a Colonel Porter’s Emporium speciality and not only can Tipsy Tea customers opt for The Great Bear, made of Havana Especial Rum, Noveltea Tangier, crème d’abricot, angostura bitters, ginger syrup and mint leaves but they can also pay a visit to Archie’s Lab.

A secret room hidden behind a bookcase, Archie’s Lab houses more than 100 brands of rum along with a full range of cask ales and, of course, Newcastle Brown Ale.

The space can also be hired exclusively for private functions and will be the venue for a variety of rum tasting masterclasses and talks by politicians, explorers and entrepreneurs.

Tipsy Teas cost from £16.95 per person and Colonel Porter’s is open from 12.01pm to 12.31am from Monday to Thursday, from 11.59am to 2.01am on Friday and Saturday and from 12.01pm to 12.01am on Sunday.
