Queen Elizabeth’s Centenary to Be Marked in Newcastle at Old Eldon Square

Two North East veterans and lifelong friends, Matt Hall and Mike Brooke, members of the Joint Ex-Servicemen’s Association of Newcastle upon Tyne (JESA) are organising a service of remembrance at the cenotaph in Old Eldon Square, on Tuesday, 21st April. To mark the 100th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth’s birth, the Lord Mayor, veterans and members of the public are being invited to attend the ceremony to pay their respects.

The commemorative ceremony will include speeches, floral tributes, and musical performances by pipers from the Newcastle City Pipe Band.

Commenting on the celebrations, Matt Hall, one of the event organisers and a member of JESA, said: "For the past two years we have hosted celebrations for North East veterans to mark D-Day in 2024 and to remember VE Day last year. It is important for us to come together whenever we can to celebrate significant national milestones and our shared history. This year, in what would have been Queen Elizabeth’s 100th birthday, we wanted to invite people to come and pay their respects and to mark the centenary.”

Rachel Fenwick, NE1’s Head of Marketing and Events and Volunteer Flying Officer for the Royal Air Force Cadets said: “We are proud to support the organisers in staging and preparing for the Centenary Celebrations in Old Eldon Square. We encourage everyone to mark the occasion and to enjoy the anniversary.”
