NOVUM - Newcastle Summer Festival, is a brand-new festival experience for the city, taking place 11th to 13th August 2023.

Award winning arts producers Curated Place have partnered with Newcastle City Council and North of Tyne Combined Authority to develop the event. In its first year NOVUM will present three nights of incredible live music, opening up the iconic Civic Centre as the heart of the festival ready to grow across the city in future years.

The event will transform Newcastle’s Civic Centre and surrounding gardens into a cultural playground, where audiences can make, explore and engage with monumental scale art, music, performances and installations. Inside the Civic, gig-goers will be able to experience the Council Chamber and the Banqueting Hall for the very first time as a live music venue.

The full line up has now been confirmed and tickets are on sale. Daytime events are FREE but must be booked in advance. Tickets for evening events are priced at £16. A three-day festival pass that covers all events is available and priced at £36.00.

NOVUM Newcastle features music and A/V performances from Mim Suleiman and her band alongside Hannabiell & Midnight Blue Collective who will open the festival on Friday 11th August. Encompassing afro-beat, electronic, disco, deep house and soul. NOVUM will bring the party to the heart of the city with invigorating “Afro-psychedelic funk” sounds.

On Saturday 12th August NOVUM invites you to a night of firsts like no other: fashion favourite Lou Hayter and band launch her solo live show, stalwart techno-punks Maelstrom and Louisahhh embark on their first live-hybrid tour, and the festival presents the live debut of art-rock, Bollywood inspired, protest singer Kapil Seshasayee’s new album ‘Laal’. During the day visitors can whet their musical appetite with free gigs from Nadedja, Faithful Johannes, and Nordic new music superstar Halla Steinunn Stefánsdóttir.

The final day of the festival, Sunday 13th August, hosts up-and-coming stars in association with Sage Summer Studios, showcasing your soon to be new favourite musicians Amelia Coburn, Kindelan and Maius Mollis in the cinematic Civic Centre Council Chamber. Before the doors of the Banqueting Suite are once again thrown open to welcome international talent to Newcastle: Lindstrøm the Norwegian space-disco wizard with Faroese ORKA at their most dancefloor ready, alongside Iceland’s “Best New Performer” Gugusar and the energetic jazz, pop and R&B of Asha Gold.

Afterparties with Lubber Fiend and World Headquarters will activate Newcastle’s clubland and invite all of our visiting artists to mix and mingle setting the scene for new collaborations to a late-night soundtrack provided byDJ Awkward Black Girl, Diz, Boo and Jacklyn.

Creative Producer Kate Craddock of organiser’s Curated Place explains,
“NOVUM is bringing something new to Newcastle, giving local artists the chance to get to know international peers, inspire new collaborations and develop opportunities to make international creative careers blossom.

“We invited the Council to be the first to open their doors, in order to put the festival and our artists on the map, and they’re embracing the opportunity to introduce the Civic Centre to a whole new audience.

“NOVUM is all about welcoming people into this iconic building to discover incredible performances from local, national and international musicians they might not normally get to see.”
