Newcastle Castle Invites Visitors to Embrace Their Inner Outlaw with Rogues & Vagabonds
While many castles celebrate the splendour of kings and queens, Newcastle Castle is turning the spotlight on a very different side of history. This spring, the castle becomes home to rogues, rule-breakers and colourful characters from the past, as Rogues & Vagabonds takes over the site from 14th February to 1st June.
This bold new experience dives into the darker, more eccentric side of Newcastle’s history, revealing gripping tales of crime, punishment and survival. Visitors are invited to explore the castle through the stories of thieves, tricksters and vagabonds who once lived and worked in the shadow of its walls.
The Great Hall is transformed into a medieval courtroom, where justice was once decided, while the atmospheric Gaol delves into the realities of crime and incarceration. Along the way, visitors can uncover extraordinary local stories, including the fear and superstition surrounding the Newcastle Witches and the mystery of the infamous Black Jackey Johnson.
At the heart of the experience is the chance to become a Newcastle Castle Rogue. Visitors can create their own outlaw alias and take on a series of interactive roguish challenges throughout the castle. Through hands-on activities, storytelling and mischief, the castle becomes bold, rebellious and full of intrigue.
Designed for families, history lovers and curious minds alike, Rogues & Vagabonds offers an unmissable adventure packed with history, mystery and fun.
All activities are included with the purchase of an annual pass.
Be bold. Break the rules. Become a Castle Rogue.
