“A good city is like a good party, people stay longer than is necessary, because they are enjoying themselves” Jan Gehl

NE1, the international award-winning Business Improvement District Company, established in 2009, has earned an unparalleled reputation for delivering an exciting range of projects and events which have had a transformational impact on Newcastle city centre.

Everything that we do revolves around place, and how people engage with it. From Screen on the Green to Newcastle City Marina, Wesley Square and the Grey Street Gathering to our temporary closures of Blackett Street. All of our projects are focused on delivering a commercial and social return for the city.

It is an exciting time for Newcastle. From the £50m City Centre Transformation Programme and major works on Pilgrim Street, to the multiple developments on the Quayside that collectively amount to over £850mn of investment, there has never been a more significant time in living memory for public and private sector investment in the city.

The bit that stitches all of these disparate developments and investments together is our public realm, our civic space. NE1 has a strong track record of delivering creative, engaging and successful strategies that bring about long-term transformation, and bring areas to life in the short-term.

The Role

This is a unique opportunity to be at the forefront of a ‘once in a generation’ transformation of the city centre and our public realm, and to join a highly successful and motivated team, passionate about what they do, united in delivering an exciting and ambitious programme for Newcastle, its businesses, residents, and visitors.

Reporting directly to the Director of Operations, responsibilities of the Placemaking Project Manager include but are not limited to:

  • Contributing to, and working with the NE1 Executive Team to deliver short-term and long-term placemaking interventions and strategies
  • Managing budgets and project timelines to ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget
  • Securing permissions from relevant authorities where appropriate
  • Monitoring and evaluating the success of individual projects
  • Working with businesses, contractors, creatives, artists, and partner organisations to deliver successful projects
  • Establishing, managing, and maintaining key relationships
  • Measuring and recording results of projects, as well as reporting back to the Chief Executive, the wider NE1 team, and businesses in the city centre
  • Working with the Director of Operations and Director of Communications in a co-ordinated capacity to ensure collaboration between departments

Personal Specification

At a hugely exciting time for the company, we are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated, self-starting, and talented individual.

This position has enormous potential, coming as it does at a key time for the company, and the city.

The successful candidate will be integral in helping NE1 deliver a step-change in our place-based events and interventions, whilst contributing significantly to longer-term strategic change in the city’s public realm.

The successful candidate will be outgoing, an effective communicator, comfortable liaising with people from all walks of life and at all levels. The role would be ideally suited to a candidate from a property management, project management, events or creative industries background. Experience working with place-based initiatives is desirable, as is experience with client-facing roles.
