Groovy Sounds and Top Tales help Live Theatre celebrate 40 years of great theatre
Earlier in the year Mr Drayton's Record Player spun four classic albums from 1973 - The Year Live Theatre was founded. On Friday 11 October Mr Drayton is back with his Fourth Annual Singles Club in Live theatre’s intimate studio venue.
The concept is simple. Ten people have chosen a favourite 45. They each have three minutes to tell the world about that particular song. The single is then spun, with an accompanying slide show. At the end of the evening, the audience vote for their favourite - the winner will walk away with a much coveted trophy - and a cash prize of Five English Pounds.
Taking part are two previous winners - the current holder writer Lee Mattinson and Geoff Bell, a record player regular. Lindisfarne sticksman Ray Laidlaw, Geordie troubadour Billy Mitchell, writer Michael Chaplin, Comedians Steffan Peddie and Simon Donald, David Craig of The Futureheads, Live Theatre House Manager Carole Wears and writer and director Melanie Rashbrooke will also be taking part.
Mr Drayton said
“The beauty of the Singles Club is that everyone has a favourite single or song. Something that takes them - and the audience - to another place. The 45 rpm single is the greatest way to hear music - there's no place for it to hide. If it's rubbish it's obvious to the audience. There's no video to hide behind, no strumpets shaking their booty to help us through yet another clunker from an X Factor wannabe. It's the original and best way to hear recorded music”
The other great thing about the Record Player is that the audience love music so they're more than happy to listen to a tune. So, throw in some great stories from some of the region’s best writers, performers and entertainers and you're onto a winner. It's always a good humoured and fun evening, backed up with some great tunes.
