GRAMMY award nomination for Northern Sinfonia recording

Northern Sinfonia, Orchestra of The Sage Gateshead, are celebrating after having had one of their latest CDs nominated for a GRAMMY award. Internationally acclaimed cellist Antonio Meneses, together with conductor Claudio Cruz and Northern Sinfonia, recorded this world-premiere recording of Hans Gál’s Cello Concerto, coupled with Elgar’s Cello Concerto. The recording has been nominated in the Best Classical Instrumental Solo category. This is the only concerto recording to be nominated in the category, the others being solo instrumental. According to Gramophone, the “superb first recording of his Cello Concerto … could hardly be more eloquently served than here: the commanding Brazilian virtuoso Antonio Meneses surmounts every hurdle with ease and he is backed to the hilt by his compatriot Claudio Cruz at the helm of a notably alert Northern Sinfonia.” The 55th annual GRAMMY awards will be held in Los Angeles on Sunday, 10 February 2013.
