Esteemed Director Appointed for Brand-New Community Choir, Tyne Theatre Voices

The Tyne Theatre & Opera House is delighted to announce the appointment of Stephen Waller as the Choir Director for its newly launched community choir, Tyne Theatre Voices.

A well-respected figure in the North East’s music education and choral community, Stephen brings a wealth of experience to the role, having spent over a decade as Director of Music at Newcastle Preparatory School. His leadership in community choirs, including The Newcastle Singers and People’s Theatre Choir, as well as his current role with Northern Proud Voices—Newcastle’s LGBT+ community choir—makes him ideally placed to lead this exciting new initiative.

Rachel Snape, the theatre’s Head of Community Engagement and Participation, shared her enthusiasm, stating, “We are thrilled to welcome Stephen to the team. His reputation for musical excellence, inclusive teaching, and inspiring leadership speaks for itself. Tyne Theatre Voices will be a welcoming, joyful, and ambitious group, and Stephen is the perfect person to shape its sound and spirit.”

The appointment comes at a pivotal moment in the theatre’s evolving community programme, which includes a reimagined youth theatre and the development of the theatre's in-house production company.

Jonathan Higgins, CEO of Tyne Theatre & Opera House, said, “Stephen’s appointment is a major step forward for our community engagement vision. As we launch Tyne Theatre Voices alongside our expanded youth theatre and amateur production company, Stephen’s leadership will ensure we nurture an inclusive and vibrant musical community here at the theatre. This role is crucial—and we’re delighted to have found someone of his calibre and passion.”

Stephen’s approach to choral work is grounded in accessibility and artistic integrity, supporting both confident singers and those completely new to music. With a master’s degree in music, a diploma in Piano Performance, and a depth of teaching and conducting experience, he combines technical excellence with a deep commitment to participation and creativity.

Stephen Waller states, “I am absolutely delighted to be leading Tyne Theatre Voices as their Choir Director. Newcastle has such a vibrant musical heritage, and I can’t wait to be part of an exciting new chapter with this brand-new community choir.”

Tyne Theatre Voices is set to launch its inaugural season this autumn, with plans for open rehearsals, community performances, and creative collaborations with the theatre’s wider programme.
