Charitable Students Are A Cut Above

When students at Newcastle College offered a free haircut to Director of School, Jo Phillips, she didn’t realise that they actually wanted to take seven inches off the length of her hair.
The hairdressing students approached Jo as part of a project they were working on to support the Little Princess Trust, a charity that provides real hair wigs to children across the UK that have lost their hair through cancer treatment.
Jo was more than happy to oblige and allowed the students to plait and cut over seven inches of her hair for the charity, along with course leader, Marie Hunter.
To further support the charity, the students have pledged a free hair cut for anyone who is willing to donate seven inches or more of their hair for the charity. Donations can be made by contacting the Lifestyle Academy or by coming along to a special event this Thursday (26 November) at 1pm where there will also be fundraising activities for the charity, including a raffle, face painting and cakes donated by the hospitality students.
Jo Phillips said: “When I heard the hairdressing students had instigated an active involvement in supporting this wonderful charity as part of their enrichment activities, I was delighted my hair was long enough to be able to take part. Both the charity event this week and the on-going offer of a free hair cut to any customer willing to donate 7” of hair, is not only a great community project but continues the great charity work the hair and beauty students engage in year on year. I am delighted with our students’ on-going commitment to developing awareness of corporate social engagement and supporting such worthwhile community projects.”
To donate hair to the Little Princess Trust, contact Newcastle College Lifestyle Academy on 0191 200 4602 or come to the hairdressing salon on the 3rd floor from 1pm on Thursday 26 November.
