Newcastle’s Tyneside Cinema is delighted to announce that applications are now open for the BFI Film Academy for 16-19 year olds. The Film Business programme will help young people take their first steps in a career in film, and will run over five weeks from Saturday 19 January - Saturday 23 March 2013.
Participants will learn all about the film industry directly from some of the leading professionals working in film production, distribution and programming today. Among the special guest speakers taking part in this innovative new programme is Oscar-nominated screenwriter and playwright Peter Straughan, whose script for the British blockbuster Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy earned him two BAFTA awards earlier this year.
The young people will also have the opportunity to watch some of the greatest films ever made and find out how and why they were produced, and try their hand at making their own films by recreating classic moments from cinema at the Tyneside's state-of-the-art Pop-Up Film School at Eldon Square.
The BFI Film Academy is funded by the Department for Education and delivered by Tyneside Cinema, as part of a nationwide programme throughout England. A selected number of participants from the BFI Film Academy programmes across the country will also have the chance to attend a national residential Talent Campus later in the year.
Applications for The Film Business at Tyneside Cinema are open now for 16-19 year olds, and the closing date for applications is 5pm on Monday 7 January. To find out more about the programme and how to apply please visit www.tynesidecinema.co.uk/bfifilmacademy.
Peter Straughan, Oscar-nominated screenwriter and guest speaker for the BFI Film Academy at Tyneside Cinema said "I am thrilled to be involved with The Film Business at Tyneside Cinema. This exciting new programme offers young people a fantastic opportunity to find out what it takes to get a film on the big screen - from the first draft of the script to the cinema box office - and discover how they can find their place in the film industry of the future.”
Holli McGuire, Cinema Projects Manager for Tyneside Cinema said, "We are delighted to open applications for The Film Business programme, which is a brilliant addition to Tyneside Cinema’s existing range of opportunities for young people to engage with film. We’re looking for committed and enthusiastic young people from all backgrounds who have a real passion for cinema to take part, and we can’t wait for the programme to start in the New Year!”
