On Sunday 22 February Hollywood’s finest will be putting on their glad rags and sauntering down the red carpet (or tripping down it in Jennifer Lawrence’s case) for the 87th Academy Awards, the biggest event in the filmmaking calendar. To mark this occasion, Newcastle's Tyneside Cinema will be screening all of the contenders for the big prize of the night: the Best Picture Award, over the next week giving audiences the chance to catch any of the films they may have missed or desperately want to see again on the big screen. In total there are eight films battling it out for the award with Richard Linklater’s Boyhood, which was filmed intermittently over 12 years using the same actors to show a boy’s journey from a 5 year-old to a 18 year-old, the current frontrunner having already won both the BAFTA and Golden Globe in the same category. This year’s other contenders are black comedy Birdman starring Best Actor nominee Michael Keaton, Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper, quirky director Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel, Martin Luther King drama Selma, Stephen Hawking biopic The Theory Of Everything starring the BAFTA and Golden Globe winning actor Eddie Redmayne, jazz thriller Whiplash starring the BAFTA and Golden Globe winning actor J.K. Simmons, and Alan Turing biopic The Imitation Game starring Benedict Cumberbatch. Jonny Tull, Cinema Programme Manager for Tyneside Cinema said, “It’s been another amazing year for cinema and these films really showcase what a fantastic selection of movies Tyneside Cinema audiences have been able to enjoy over the last 12 months. All of these films were extremely popular with our audiences when we originally screened them so we’re thrilled to be able to bring them back to give more people the chance to watch them, for the first time or for a repeat viewing, and we can’t wait to see who walks away with the award on the night.” Tickets for all of these films are on sale now at the Tyneside Cinema Box Office, by phone on 0845 217 9909 or online from www.tynesidecinema.co.uk.
