A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S…BALLET!

After the phenomenal sell-out success of The Nutcracker, Northern Ballet is back at Newcastle Theatre Royal this September with a revival of the much loved Olivier-nominated dance version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The Company will perform the magical production, choreographed by Artistic Director David Nixon OBE, Tuesday 17 – Saturday 21 September. In Northern Ballet’s adaptation of the Shakespeare play, the romantic antics of a touring dance company are played out on one magical night as the company travels by sleeper train from London to Edinburgh. Emotions are running high as artistic temperaments clash with romantic entanglements. As the Company settle down for the night, the train enters a tunnel and the dream begins… Nixon’s stunning choreography brings out the comedy, romance and entanglements of this enchanting story. His Dior-inspired costumes, along with stylish black and white sets, provide a dazzling contrast to the glorious technicolour of the dreamworld. David Nixon said, ‘My version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream is about young dancers and the passions and tribulations that a young touring company get themselves entangled in. It was really important to me to bring the romantic elements out of this much loved story. I always enjoy seeing the reaction of the audience to this ballet. It’s great to hear them laughing! The ballet is very playful and uplifting and I think many people are pleasantly surprised to see so much humour captured in dance.’ A Midsummer Night’s Dream will be performed against stunning sets by Duncan Hayler with music by Felix Medelssohn and Johannes Brahms, arranged by John Longstaff and performed live by Northern Ballet Sinfonia. Whilst visiting the Theatre Royal, Northern Ballet will also perform a short, child friendly retelling of the famous Hans Christian Anderson fairy-tale, Ugly Duckling. This presents the perfect opportunity to introduce little ones to the magic of live ballet, music and theatre. Northern Ballet’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream appears at Newcastle Theatre Royal from Tuesday 17 – Saturday 21 September 2013. Northern Ballet’s Ugly Duckling is showing on Friday 20 September only, at 11am and 1pm. Tickets can be purchased from the Theatre Royal Box Office on 08448 11 21 21 or select your own seat and book online at www.theatreroyal.co.uk
