Newcastle Panto presents: The Lambton Worm: Tyne Theatre & Opera House
This Event has passed
Newcastles favourite Panto Production Company, Newcastle Panto Ltd, is breaking new ground with its first ever summer production.
The producers have decided to recreate the first ever pantomime to grace the theatres stage with a production of The Lambton Worm. First performed in 1867, the traditional story will be given a Newcastle Panto Ltd makeover to bring the story of the local legend to a new generation of theatre goers.
One of the regions most famous pieces of folklore, the story tells of local lad, John Lambton, who catches a worm while fishing. Having cast the worm down a well, the worm grows to mammoth proportions over the years, large enough to wrap its body around Penshaw Hill, and terrorises local villages, eating livestock and causing devastation to the area. John Lambton ultimately battles the worm and defeats it.
The famous song which recites the story of the worm was written especially for the pantomime at The Tyne Theatre in 1867. This latest version of the story is a musical comedy which will retell the legend in a light-hearted and entertaining show, presented by many familiar faces from the Christmas pantos: ever popular Charlie Richmond will play John Lambton and is joined by North East actress, Philippa Wilson and panto stalwart, Maxie Peters. Peters, one of the companys founding members, will once again write and direct the show as well as starring in it.
