Visible invisibles: Women in Roman archaeology: Newcastle University

Women have played a vital role in advancing our understanding of Roman archaeology in Britain and beyond, yet their contributions have often gone unrecognised. While many areas of archaeology are reassessing the role of women in the discipline, Roman archaeology has been slower to do so. This lecture presents research undertaken by the speakers and a wider network of scholars on women working in Roman Britain and provincial Roman archaeology during the 19th and 20th centuries. Through the stories of individual women, they will explore why their achievements are less well known, considering factors such as access to education and employment, financial resources, research specialisms, geography, and the social constraints of their time. Despite these barriers, their work has made a lasting contribution to the development of Roman archaeology as we know it today.
