Meet the Grainger Market Traders: Amblergem Jewellers
Learn more about the team behind Amblergem Jewellers, a “jewel” (pardon the pun!) of Newcastle’s Grainger Market

In our latest instalment of ‘Meet the Grainger Market Traders’, we talk to Paul, co-owner of Amblergem Jewellery alongside his wife Angie – one of Newcastle’s last remaining on-site repair jewellers.
Now a Grainger Market mainstay, having traded there for over two decades, we caught up with Paul to find out why he became a goldsmith, the secret to Amblergem’s long-running success and why it’s great being a part of the Grainger Market community.
What made you want to become a goldsmith?
I started my career as a screen printer. I enjoyed the work, but I wasn’t sure it was something I wanted to do long-term. One day, I struck up a conversation with a customer who asked if I’d ever considered a career as a goldsmith. That was back in 1983 and I’ve never looked back since.
Amblergem has been trading in Grainger Market for over two decades. What’s the secret behind the shop’s longevity?
The secret is our customers. Every day brings new challenges - different finishes, designs, and restorations – and we love every minute of it. We also aim to make our services accessible. We want everyone to be able to care for their family jewellery and pieces that hold sentimental value, without breaking the bank.
What was it like taking over the reins of the business after previous owner Martin retired?
When Martin decided to retire, he asked me to buy the business because he wanted it in safe hands. After a decade at the bench in Grainger Market, I wasn’t ready to leave. It was a joint decision with my wife, Angela, and it’s been one of the best decisions we’ve ever made.

You create bespoke jewellery for customers – which designs have you particularly enjoyed bringing to life?
I love creating pieces in collaboration with my customers. For example, melting down parents’ wedding bands to craft new jewellery for their children is always special. It keeps costs reasonable and creates something truly personal. I often suggest options that customers hadn’t considered – it’s a joy seeing their reactions when they realise what’s possible.
During your time at Amblergem, in what ways has Grainger Market evolved over the years and what has stayed the same?
Grainger Market has evolved a lot, with improvements and a variety of shops coming in over the years. What hasn’t changed is its ability to draw in the next generation of visitors - it still has that sense of community and excitement that makes it unique.
And finally, what’s your favourite thing about being a part of the Grainger Market community?
Every day is different from the last, and that’s what makes it so enjoyable. Grainger Market has a unique atmosphere that you don’t get that in most shopping centres across the UK. It’s lively, friendly, and a place we love to be.
Amberlgem Jewellery is located in Unit 79 on Alley 2 in Grainger Market and is open Monday to Saturday between 10am and 4:30pm. For more information visit amblergemjewellers.co.uk.
