Everything You Need To Know About The Great Market Caper

Last updated:

Billed as ‘the Grainger Market, but not as you know it’, The Great Market Caper is a brand new event set to take over the city’s iconic indoor market on the first Saturday of every month.

The Caper is the brainchild of former NE1 chief executive Sean Bullick, currently director of organisers Let’s Stick Together Events. He teases what attendees can expect from the event: “At the Great Market Caper, you could only be in Newcastle. Not only is each Caper going to be a fantastic night out right in the heart of the city, but they will also showcase the extraordinary depth of local talent which exists in the region.”

The first event takes place on Saturday 3rd September and runs from 6pm until midnight, offering a rare opportunity to enjoy the beautiful Georgian alleyways of the Grainger Market after dark. Each event will be unique, and you never know what you might find; The Caper intends to delight and entertain with live music, unusual performances and unique entertainment, not to mention a stellar cast of food and five great bars which will offer up a superb variety of beer, wine, spirits and cocktails.

The Grainger Market has become synonymous with a great food experience in recent years, and that superb reputation will be enhanced with the addition of guest chefs from some of the city’s top restaurants. Preparing their lip-smacking goodies in September are top Grainger Market vendors including purveyors of Greek treats Acropolis, Indian street food experts Snackwallah, delicious mac ‘n’ cheese peddlers Redheads, and the finest fried chicken from FED’s, plus there'll be a special offering from legendary restaurateur Terry Laybourne's Saltwater Fish Company (which can be found in Fenwick food hall) along with a very special Broad Chare offering.

Top chef and partner in the highly-rated Chillingham Road BaoBar, Richard Wheatley said, “I’m really excited about being asked to be part of The Great Market Caper. I think the concept is sound and I hope it becomes a really established part of Newcastle’s offer. I will be providing two very different culinary options on 3rd September: to find out what they are, you will have to come along on the night!”

All great nights out are made better with music, and The Caper have grand plans featuring superb performances from some of the region’s most exciting artists. September’s event will feature Unit44 DJ Steven Dunn, indie folk songwriter Zac Younger Banks, Mancunian songwriter Nadeem and alt. singer-songwriter Hannah Robinson. There’s also stand-up comedy courtesy of the superb Felt Nowt cooperative, who present rib-tickling sets from Rachel Jackson, Gavin Webster and David Hadingham, and if you fancy a boogie you can join SalSeduce maestro Chris Pentland for a salsa lesson!

Tickets for the 2,000 capacity event cost a mere £10, and are available in advance from their website. The organisers are keen for The Caper to become a one-stop shop of interesting and unique entertainment in the city, so expect the unexpected – from circus performers and belly dancers to roller discos and bowling in the aisles! Don’t miss it!
