Literary lovers - listen up! Books on Tyne returns for its thirteenth year in the Toon and there’s no shortage of bookish happenings to enjoy.
Whether you’re a keen bookworm, or local history aficionado, there’s something for everyone to enjoy across the city when the literature festival this November.
What is Books on Tyne?
Books on Tyne is a joint collaboration between The Lit & Phil (the largest independent library outside London!) and Newcastle Libraries, celebrating all things literature. From local stories to invigorating discussions, it’s worth putting your own book down, just to explore what they’ve got going on!
When is it happening?
The thirteenth Books on Tyne Festival is taking place from Saturday 22nd to Saturday 29th November 2025.
Where is it happening?
Events are taking place at The Lit & Phil on Westgate Road and Newcastle City Library on New Bridge Street. Check the official Books on Tyne Festival website to find out where each event is happening.
What is happening?
From moving conversations, to inspiring talks, there’s so much happening during Books on Tyne Festival this year!
Local history buffs will want to have their tickets booked for the first event at the City Library on Saturday 22nd November, as Patrick Low, Shane McCorristine, Helen Rutherford and Clare Sandford-Couch join the festival, taking a deep-dive into the history of the prison that once stood in Newcastle. Drawing on detailed research and specially commissioned 3D modelled images to bring the stories of the prisoners and staff back to live, it promises to be a fascinating morning. Alternatively, Dr. James Fox will be taking audiences on a journey through Britain’s lost arts and vanishing trades on Wednesday 26th November, following the release of his latest book Craftland earlier this year.
Intrigued about the business behind publishing? Then you won’t want to miss Sheila Wakefield at The Lit & Phil on Wednesday 26th November! The poet, short story writer and editor will be dishing out some top publishing tips, including how to improve your chances of being published, and the value of self-publishing.

To take part in Books on Tyne, all you’ll need to do is head to their website and book tickets for whatever events you’d like to attend.
How much does it cost?
Tickets for each event are priced differently, but plenty of them are also free to attend. Just make sure you’ve booked your space!
