9 of the Coolest Ice Cream Spots in NE1

Last updated:

Craving a refreshingly cool sweet treat? Then you’re in luck because here at Get Into Newcastle, we’ve got the scoop on some of the best places to get delicious ice cream in Newcastle where it’s Sundae Funday every day of the week.

Mark Toney, Grainger Street & Percy Street

A Newcastle institution, Mark Toney have been delighting Geordies with their delicious ice cream since their first shop opened in the Toon over 100 years ago and – put simply – their ice cream is legend-dairy. Based on a traditional Italian family recipe, they serve a smorgasbord of homemade flavours with something to suit pretty much everyone – whether it’s Sicilian pistachio, rum and raisin, key lime pie or lemon meringue. Stop by for a cone or one of their famous sundaes at Mark Toney’s two locations on Grainger Street and Percy Street.

Caffe Ginevra, Pilgrim Street

Caffe Ginevra might be a new kid on the block in Newcastle, but business has been booming since it opened its doors in the historic Alderman Fenwick’s House on Pilgrim Street in July 2022. That’s thanks to its delicious locally-made, Italian-style gelato which comes in a range of ever-changing flavours – from tiramisu and rhubarb crumble to coconut and passion fruit. Gelato panini (ice cream sandwiches) are a specialty too and Caffe Ginevra has plenty of Sicilian coffee on tap for when you start to feel the chill.

Kaspa’s, Clayton Street

For ice cream sundaes served up in retro American diner-style surrounds, look no further than Kaspa’s – aka the “King of Desserts.” One look at its sundae menu and you’ll know just how spoilt for choice you truly are. Will it be the Chocoholic (chocolate and caramel gelato, soft ice cream, whipped cream, milk chocolate syrup, milk chocolate flakes and nuts) or the Berrylicious (raspberry ripple and bubblegum gelato, soft ice cream, sugar strands, cherry and bubblegum sauce)?

Heavenly Desserts, Newgate Street

Luxury desserts are on the menu at Heavenly Desserts, an award-winning chain that opened its Newcastle branch on Newgate Street in early 2022. They don’t scrimp on the sundaes either with inventively indulgent options like warm brownie, salted caramel and banana which comes with banana and Stracciatella gelato or the Sundae Royale – cocoa hazelnut gelato with waffle cones, warm Nutella, Ferrero Rocher and caramelised hazelnuts. With several dairy-free sundaes available, vegans can get their ice cream fix at Heavenly Desserts too.

Sweet Dreams Dessert Café, St Andrew’s Street

Sweet Dreams Dessert Café boasts a vintage-inspired interior complete with chandelier and luxurious velvet booth seating and is known in the Toon for its indulgent desserts. Ice cream features pretty predominantly on the menu too: it’s served with waffles, crepes and churros and there are a number of sundaes to feast on as well. Choose from sundae flavours like banoffee, bubblegum and Lotus biscuit.

Tsujiri, St Andrew’s Street

For ice cream that’s a little out of the ordinary, Japanese dessert house Tsujiri is the place to be. They’re masters of “teasingly good” matcha, or green-tea-flavoured, ice cream and offer soft serves (served in cones or cups), sundaes and floats. Kinako (soybean flour) ice cream is also available, and you can customise your icy treat with a range of toppings – kuromitsu sugar syrup and shiratama mochi included.

I Scream For Pizza, Quayside

Is there a more perfect place for an ice cream and a leisurely summer stroll than the Quayside? Cool down with a cone from I Scream For Pizza and choose from fior de latte or chocolate soft serve ice cream topped with sauces inclufin salted caramel and classic monkey's blood. For something a little more indulgent, opt for one of their temptings sundaes like The Big Apple featuring fior de latte soft serve, ginger cake, streusel crumble, apple compote and salted caramel sauce.

Creams Café, Grainger Street

Flamboyant desserts are the name of the game for sweet tooth haunt Creams Café. Its sundae menu is living proof of that with crazy creations like the Hot ‘n’ Cold Chocolate Cake Volcano (featuring hot chocolate cake, vanilla ice cream, toffee sauce and chocolate shavings) and the Totally Minted (with mint choc chip gelato, vanilla ice cream, chocolate sauce and After Eight) to tempt you. If you’re looking for something slightly more lowkey, opt for a gelato in a classic flavour like strawberry or pistachio.

Urban Green Café, Exhibition Park

If you’re taking a leisurely stroll through Exhibition Park, then Urban Green Café is ideal for a quick ice cream break away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre. They serve up the award-winning wares of Blyth-based business Ciccarelli Artisan Gelato and offer a rotating line-up of flavours – from classics like vanilla and chocolate to options like cookie dough and salted caramel – that are available with a range of toppings.
