Newcastle’s Cultural Highlights This Bank Holiday Weekend

Looking to soak up some culture in the Toon this bank holiday weekend? Check out five of our favourite events in the city to keep your brains ticking and diaries full…

Laing Art Gallery

WOW: Women Only Works on Paper - Laing Art Gallery

A visit to the Laing Art Gallery should be a must on your bank holiday agenda. The team here have done it again with this incredible exhibition. Women Only Works on Paper is a display of over 50 watercolours and pastels complemented by etchings and screenprints. There’s something truly special about this exhibition. Spend the afternoon gazing upon inspiring, impeccably detailed and moving artwork produced by a wonderful bunch of talented artists. The exhibition has been brought together by the renowned art dealers Liss Llewellyn and includes some works from private collections as well as pictures from the Laing collection. Entry is free, but donations are welcome.

Great North Museum

Other Worlds: The Art of Atomhawk

Ever wondered how concept art for video games and movies is created? Then this exhibition is for you. The art of Gateshead design studio Atomhawk will take you to other worlds in this new exhibition. Enter the fantasy universe of The Realm and experience Tyneside like never before as you delve into the process of a digital artist. Atomhawk’s designers have contributed to films and video games such as Guardians of the Galaxy, Age of Empires and Minecraft Earth. This inspiring exhibition is free for all to enjoy. Sounds pretty cool if you ask us.

Times Square

Central Park - Toy Story

If you don’t know, then get to know. Central Park is the Toon’s newest and biggest beer garden located in the heart of the city. This lush green space has been designed for 100s of people to go and enjoy a much-needed, socially distanced catch up with loves ones. Head down this bank holiday Monday for a special Toy Story themed family session. The beloved Pixar film will be shown on the big screen and the classic characters will all be there doing meet and greet's for the little ones. Tables can be booked for groups of 2 - 12 people on their website for just £1 per person.

Discovery Museum

Spread Your Wings With The RAF Red Arrows

Go for the ride of a lifetime this bank holiday with an experience like no other. Head on over to the Discovery Museum and check out their new flight simulator. Experience the thrill of the cockpit and fly with the RAF’s Red Arrows as they jet over their Cyprus training base. Step inside a state-of-the-art capsule for an immersive ride with high-definition visuals, surround sound and dynamic motion. Sounds pretty cool, right? Booking is essential and only one visitor group (family/support bubble) of up to 6 people is allowed at any time.

Pakui Hardware

Culture seekers are in for a treat with this one! Go here for a mind-opening, futuristic and unique experience. This cool and quirky exhibition looks at the future of the world’s healthcare system, considering the movement of capital through bodies, technology and materials and how it shapes our realities. Pakui Hardware’s first solo UK exhibition at BALTIC will use the space to create an environment that resembles a clinical surgery room where human presence - with the exception of the visitor themselves - is replaced by technology. Don’t miss out on this one!
