WEDNESDAY 10 JULY 2019
What a summer of sport it has been in NE1 so far! We’ve had European Rugby finals, university boat races, live Wimbledon screenings at NE1's Screen on the Green - and now we’re taking to two wheels, bringing you NE1's Newcastle City Sprint 2019! Team NE1 has joined forces with Newcastle City Council, HSBC UK, Velo 29 and British Cycling to host a major, elite cycle race through the heart of the city this July.
Part of the HSBC UK National Circuit Series, 80 elite male competitors will set off on a city centre circuit at 8pm, starting on Grey Street and passing behind the Grainger Market, down the Bigg Market and on to High Bridge's cobbles, before crossing the finish line back on Grey Street.
After an evening of high-octane action, a trophy presentation will follow. The podium will be placed in a prime position on Grey Street - surrounded by the stunning Grade II Listed architecture in the shadow of Grey's Monument.
In addition to the elite male race, and as a warm up to the main event, 60 youth competitors will take to the roads in an earlier challenge from 6.30pm.
This is the first time in over 20 years that a race of this calibre has been staged in the city and will attract some of the finest British cyclists including former Olympic and European Championship riders.
The HSBC UK National Circuit Series is now one of the highlights of British Cycling’s road racing calendar and we’re incredibly excited to see a part of it staged here in NE1!
One of six rides nationally, the Newcastle race is round three, before heading up and down the country.
We’re expecting large crowds to gather in NE1 as this thrilling cycle race whizzes through the Toon. So round up the troops after work, find a spot along the circuit, cheer on the competitors and enjoy another spectacular sporting event as the sun sets over Newcastle this Wednesday 10th July 2019.
