Women's Football Given Centre-Stage as Tyneside Cinema Welcomes Local Legends for Cinematic Event

Tyneside Cinema presents audiences with a chance to witness the glory and drama of modern and historic football with a one-off screening of Copa 71, the hidden story of the 1971 Women’s World Cup, alongside a special panel event featuring the biggest regional teams and North East football experts from both on and off the pitch.

Told by the pioneering women who participated in it, and built from an archive unseen for fifty years, Copa 71 is the extraordinary story of the 1971 Women’s World Cup: a tournament witnessed by record crowds that has been written out of sporting history — until now.

In addition to giving you the chance to see this historic moment unfold on the big screen - in their majestic, Grade II-listed Art Deco Classic screen - Tyneside Cinema will be welcoming a variety of special guests to lend their expertise and discuss the film.

Hosting the panel will be well known podcaster Charlotte Robson (True Faith Podcast) alongside Newcastle United FC Captain Amber-Keegan Stobbs, Sunderland A.F.C Women’s Head Coach Melanie Reay and Team Captain Brianna Westrup as well as sports journalist George Caulkin (The Athletic, Pod on The Tyne).

Tyneside Cinema is an independent venue with a proud history of supporting and platforming voices that are typically underrepresented, and the Copa 71 panel screening is just one of the many exciting and eye-opening events to come in 2024.
