TRAVELLING FROM FAR AND WIDE TO ATTEND NORTH EAST PRIDE EVENT

An American couple, who are strong supporters of equality and gay rights, are travelling more than 4000 miles to attend their first Pride event in the UK. Bradley Homer and Michael Podanowski, who live in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, are among thousands of people from across the UK and further afield who are heading to the North East for Newcastle Pride next weekend (July 20). The couple, who recently got engaged after more than seven years together, were made aware of the event on North East LGBT community radio station, Pride Radio, which they often listen to online. Bradley said; “From listening to Pride Radio it seems that everyone in the North East is friendly, down to earth and lots of fun. “We can’t wait to experience a Pride celebration outside the US and meet like-minded people who share our belief in fighting for equality regardless of where they live or what culture they’re from.” Newcastle Pride, which celebrates the North East’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community, is organised annually by Northern Pride and was attended by around 23,000 visitors in 2012. This year’s event, which will feature live performances by X Factor finalist Amelia Lily and 80s star Toyah, is expected to be even bigger, with the potential to boost Tyneside’s economy by an estimated £1m. Peter Darrant, Chair of Northern Pride, said: “Every year Newcastle Pride attracts thousands of visitors to the North East, bringing a welcome boost to businesses such as restaurants, bars and hotels. “This year it looks like Bradley and Michael will be clocking up the most miles in order to attend, but we’ve also had enquiries from right across the UK, including Brighton, Edinburgh, Belfast and Glasgow, so it should be a really good crowd.” Newcastle Pride, which is being held at the city’s Exhibition Park, will host a variety of live entertainment from big names acts and North East talent, as well as a health zone, cabaret tent, sports arena, trans zone, dance tent, tea tent, women’s zone and a funfair. For the first time in its six year history this year’s event, which is free to attend, will also host a family zone with a range of activities for all ages.
