The Inaugural Bigg Market Bash

To celebrate the completion of the newly redeveloped Bigg Market – NE1 Ltd with support from Newcastle City Council’s Market Team will be hosting the first ever ‘Bigg Market Bash’, a family fun day and street food market in the Bigg Market on Saturday 13 April from 11am to 4pm.

Designed to welcome people into the area to enjoy the newly refurbished public space, the Bigg Market Bash will be an event which showcases the recently refurbished public realm.

The format has a bustling street food market at its core, with children’s entertainment and activities, as well as live performances from local bands and musicians on a main stage hosted and compered by Metro Radio.  Among the performers already booked for the event are the renowned Rock Choir, who thrilled onlookers at Grey’s Monument at Christmas, a folk band, Pons Aelius, as well as other artists, bands and performers still to be confirmed.

The stage will be located at the bottom end of the Bigg Market in front of the historic Victorian toilets, facing the stalls and activities positioned on the four newly created terraces in the centre of the Bigg Market.

Among the market stalls will be some of Newcastle’s leading street food vendors including Le Petite Creperie, Laneway Coffee who will also be selling  Proven Goods doughnuts and CurryRolls, fresh from their third successive year being crowned people’s champion in the Argie Bhaji Street food battle at Wylam Brewery.  Kafe Neon, the Greek restaurant, based on the Bigg Market, will also bring their offering outside for the event.

Play in Newcastle,  local children’s play specialists, will be in charge of children’s activities on the day offering face painting and arts and crafts all on an Easter Theme.  NE1’s brightly coloured bean bags, picnic benches and deck chair seating used last year for the Blackett Street takeovers will make a reappearance for families to sit and enjoy the event, the entertainment and the atmosphere.

Local historian and tour operator, Alex Iles – from Iles tour will be roaming the Bigg Market providing short informal tours of the area and giving snippets of history and information about the Bigg Market and its rich history.

This Bigg Market Bash will be the first of a series of NE1 Ltd led events over the spring and summer, which will be staged in the Bigg Market.

Alex Slack, Project Manager for NE1 Ltd’s Bigg Market project said:
“We are excited to be hosting the first of what we hope to be many exciting new events on the Bigg Market.  It is great to be able to welcome people to the newly completed public space for them to enjoy the area and to give them an idea of how the space, and the city’s heritage and culture can be enjoyed.

“As part of our regeneration of the Bigg Market, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, and the City Council, as well as physically redeveloping the area, our remit was to change perceptions and use of the area.  Re-animating and reviving the market is one clear way we can revive the fortunes and breath new life into the area.

“People can expect to see regular food markets and events celebrating the heritage of the area in the coming months.
