Newcastle’s Tyneside Cinema is delighted to welcome back Steven Severin, founding member of Siouxsie and the Banshees, when he will be performing his electronic score for the classic 1920 German silent horror film The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari on Sunday 2 June. Steven will also be taking over basic.fm, Tyneside Cinema’s online radio project, for a week of programmes before the event, which will be broadcast from Monday 27 May – Sunday 2 June. Directed by influential German filmmaker Robert Wiene, The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari is widely considered to be one of the most important films in the history of cinema. Filmed in black and white using stylised, two-dimensional sets, the story begins when a travelling carnival arrives at a tiny German town. The visit coincides with a series of murders, and suspicion falls on the carnival’s sinister hypnotist, Doctor Caligari. Bass guitarist and songwriter Steven Severin founded English rock band Siouxsie and the Banshees with vocalist Siouxsie Sioux in 1976, and the group achieved recognition with hit singles including Happy House, Hong Kong Garden and their cover of The Beatles’ Dear Prudence. Steven also formed The Glove, a side project with The Cure’s Robert Smith, and now performs as a solo artist. Steven has previously composed several film soundtracks and created musical scores for a number of silent films, including Jean Cocteau’s 1930 surrealist masterpiece Blood of a Poet, which he performed at Tyneside Cinema in 2010. Tyneside Cinema’s online radio project basic.fm has also invited Steven to curate a week of programmes including recordings of his earlier electronic scores for silent films, and a selection of songs from his own iPod. Tune in from Monday 27 May at www.basic.fm or via the free iPhone and Android apps. Jonny Tull, Cinema Programme Manager at Tyneside Cinema said, “Tyneside Cinema is very excited to welcome back Steven Severin for another extraordinary live performance. The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari is one of the most influential horror films ever made, and we’re very proud to present this special opportunity to watch this landmark of silent cinema with Steven’s electronic score.” Tickets for The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari with a Live Score by Steven Severin at Tyneside Cinema on Sunday 2 June at 6pm are on sale now and cost £10. Tickets are available in person from the Tyneside Cinema Box Office, by telephone on 0845 217 9909 or online at www.tynesidecinema.co.uk.
