Royal Northern Sinfonia bring classical music to a new generation at Sage Gateshead

If you're a parent and hoping to get your little one interested in classical music, Royal Northern Sinfonia's latest Classics 4 Kids concert will be perfect! Head to the Sage Gateshead on Saturday 22nd April to enjoy.

Taking place at 2pm in Sage One, this will be the third and final instalment of Royal Northern Sinfonia’s series of children’s concerts this season – and judging by audience testimonials from the previous two concerts, is not to be missed.

One Twitter user posted that they were left feeling “like a door opened for me and the children into classical music” with another tweeting that the concert was “brilliantly done.” Likewise, one parent commented on Facebook that it was “a real opportunity for me and the kids to experience the orchestra”, adding “we have been to The Snowman but this was something different and we loved it”.

The 45-minute long concerts are aimed at children aged five and over and feature musical repertoire adapted from Royal Northern Sinfonia’s main series of concerts, which is then broken down and introduced to children in a fun and accessible way. 
Speaking ahead of the concert, Helen Blythe, Classical Music Producer at Sage Gateshead said: “The Classics 4 Kids concerts are a fantastic way to engage your children in listening to and enjoying classical music.

“Rather than performing works which are written specifically for children, we’re offering the ‘real deal’ – Main Series Royal Northern Sinfonia repertoire – but we’re making it more accessible. 

“We do this by weaving stories, games and interaction throughout the concerts and presenting the music in bite-sized chunks, guiding our audience with things to listen out for and helping them to understand how it works – and hopefully have lots of fun too!”

Saturday’s Classics 4 Kids concert will feature music from Richard Strauss’ Horn Concerto No.1 and Schoenberg’s Ten Early Waltzes, conducted by Royal Northern Sinfonia Conductor Laureate Thomas Zehetmair. Adding to the concert experience, there will be free violin instrument demonstrations and other musical activities on the Concourse from 1.15pm, as well as a ‘classical music disco’ straight after the concert.

While this is the last Classics 4 Kids concert this season, fear not: Sage Gateshead’s brand new Classical Season starts in September 2017 and there will be more Classics 4 Kids concerts for families to enjoy.
