Newcastle University professors jump on Board for Life

Newcastle University Professors join registered charity Life to inspire and encourage children and young adults to choose a career in STEM.

The International Centre for Life is pleased to announce the appointment of two new trustees, Professor Richard Davies and Professor Joris Veltman.

As a registered charity, Life is governed by a Board of Trustees. Each member contributes their time and expertise to help ensure the wellbeing and future of the organisation so that it can continue to ignite and nurture a curiosity in everyone for science, technology, engineering and maths, and support world-class research in the region.

The new trustees have many years of specialist industry experience behind them that will be immensely valuable to Life’s Board of Trustees.

Professor Richard Davies is the Pro Vice-Chancellor of Engagement and Internationalisation at Newcastle University. He is a petroleum geologist and founder of the Durham Energy Institute.

Speaking about his new appointment, Professor Davies said: “I am delighted to be joining the Board of Trustees of the International Centre for Life, which has established itself as a hub for ground-breaking scientific work and communication of science internationally. It hosts some of Newcastle University’s pioneering research, carried out at the Institute for Genetic Medicine, which is responsive to tackling large-scale societal needs and demands in the UK and globally.”

Joining him on the Board is Professor Joris Veltman, who was recently appointed as Director of Newcastle University’s Institute for Genetic Medicine. He came to Newcastle from Radboud University Medical Centre in the Netherlands.

Professor Veltman said: “As a trustee of the International Centre for Life, I’m really looking forward to contributing my skills and working with Life to inspire children and young adults to choose a career in STEM.”

Life is a truly unique organisation, encompassing a science centre, conferencing facilities, cutting-edge research laboratories and NHS clinics – all in the heart of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. With so many strings to its bow, the right support is crucial to Life’s ongoing success.

Alastair Balls, Chairman of the Trust for the International Centre for Life, added: “It’s great to be able to welcome these two star scientists who will strengthen our mission as the premier science centre of the North.”
