Newcastle College Students Unveil Creative Mural at Eldon Square

Eldon Square, Newcastle’s premier shopping and leisure destination, has unveiled a new creative mural in the centre as a part of a collaboration with Newcastle College. The huge new mural displays the innovative work from fashion students and will remain in the centre for several weeks.

The large-scale installation, spanning 24 metres, transforms the Eldon Square wall on Blackett Street into a striking fashion showcase, collating the work of students across multiple courses. Featuring mood boards, sketchbook pages, technical fashion flats, illustrations and styled photography, the mural gives a view into the creative process that drives emerging design talent.

The project is part of Eldon Square and Newcastle College’s ongoing commitment to promoting the future of fashion in the North East and giving students real-world experience, along with a platform to highlight creativity beyond the classroom. By displaying their work in a busy public space, the initiative bridges the gap between education and industry, helping with confidence and professional exposure.

The project spotlights students from multiple courses in the college including FdA Fashion Design and Innovation Technologies, FdA 3D Garment Design and Product Development, BA Hons Creative Practice and BTEC Extended Diploma in Fashion and Textiles. The vast majority of design work featured has been developed by students at Newcastle College University Centre, the college's higher education arm.

On Saturday 27th September, the mural will come to life as part of the DeepFrame 3D display on St Andrew’s Way, created in partnership with Sunderland Software City for Eldon Square’s Future of Fashion activation.

Helen Cowie, Centre Director at Eldon Square said: “We’re thrilled to display the creativity of Newcastle College students in this unique mural. Eldon Square is more than just a shopping destination, it is a place where community and creativity can come together, and this collaboration perfectly illustrates this. We’re excited to show it to the wider Newcastle community and show them the exciting future the city has in this space.”

Libby Lagun, Head of Curriculum for Art & Design at Newcastle College said: “This mural celebrates both the creative process and the incredible talent of our students. From early sketches to finished designs, the mural depicts the full timeline of bringing projects to life. Having their work on display in such a central space is an invaluable opportunity for them to share their vision with the wider community.”

Digital QR codes are embedded into the mural, linking shoppers directly to Newcastle College’s Art and Design, and Digital Art degree courses for information as well as student fashion videos and digital media projects.
