Newcastle Castle Launches New Volunteer Programme with Open Days to Get to Know the Site
Newcastle Castle is inviting people from across the North East to get involved with one of the city’s most iconic historic sites as it launches a new volunteering programme, alongside a series of upcoming Volunteer Open Days.
The medieval Castle Keep and Black Gate, located in the heart of Newcastle, are looking to expand their friendly volunteer team to support an exciting period of growth and development. Volunteers play a vital role in welcoming visitors, sharing the Castle’s rich history, and helping bring the site to life for audiences from across the region and beyond.
A range of new volunteer roles are now available, including Visitor Experience Assistant Volunteers, who help create a warm and engaging welcome for visitors; Tourist Information Hub Volunteers, who provide local knowledge and recommendations to help people make the most of their time in Newcastle; and Living History Volunteers, who use storytelling, costume, and informal interpretation to connect visitors with the Castle’s past. No prior experience is required, and full training and ongoing support are provided.
To give potential volunteers the chance to find out more, Newcastle Castle will be hosting a series of Volunteer Open Days. These informal sessions will include guided tours of the site, an introduction to the Castle’s plans for the future, and opportunities to meet staff and current volunteers. These are free to enter and will be held on Thursday 29th January (6pm-8pm), Friday 30th January (2pm-4pm) and Saturday 31st January (2pm-4pm), at The Black Gate, Castle Garth, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 1RQ.
The Castle is keen to hear from people of all ages and backgrounds, particularly those with an interest in community engagement, history, heritage or tourism. Volunteering offers a chance to gain new skills, meet new people, make friends, and contribute to preserving and sharing one of Newcastle’s most important historic landmarks.
