NE1 Summer in the City - The Fun Continues with Royal Northern Sinfonia Pop-Up Concerts

NE1’s Summer in the City events and activities programme continues this Saturday, 31st July with a wonderful, cultural interlude, thanks to Royal Northern Sinfonia’s; Sounds of Summer outdoor pop up concerts.

Tens of thousands of people have already been enjoying NE1’s interventions on Newcastle’s Quayside and around the city and this Saturday there will be something new for them to enjoy. The public will be able to settle down on NE1’s pop up garden on Wesley Square on the banks of the Tyne to listen to some world class orchestral music performed directly in front of them, all for free.

Two mini concerts will be held at Wesley Square on the Quayside on Saturday, the first at 11:30am, with the second taking place at 2pm. Each performance is free to attend and lasts around 45 minutes, featuring a wind quintet from the orchestra. The music will include classical and traditional favourites that people will know and love plus plenty to discover.

The pop up orchestral performances are part of a series of outside performances across Newcastle, Gateshead and Tyneside that have been organised to celebrate the return of live music this summer, by Royal Northern Sinfonia and Chorus of Royal Northern Sinfonia.

As part of its Summer in the City programme, NE1 is organising a series of interactive events and activities during the summer holidays for the whole family to enjoy. Among the free events will be yoga sessions delivered by local providers, Yoga Therapies. More than twenty free pop-up sessions will be offered throughout the summer. Lasting for 45 minutes, the sessions will be held at Wesley Square on the Quayside on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings and on NE1’s Blackett Street takeovers on Sundays during August. The yoga sessions will cater for all ages and abilities, and will be free to attend with all equipment provided, however spaces need to be booked through the www.NE1summerinthecity.co.uk website.

Running alongside the yoga sessions, NE1 has teamed up with local historian, Alex Iles, of Iles Tours to offer a weekly programme of free, historical tours around Newcastle. The sessions include visits to some of the city’s most sought after venues and historic monuments including the Grey’s Monument, the Swing Bridge and the Millennium Bridge.

During the school summer holidays NE1 is also timetabling a range of family-friendly interactive pop-up events and activities including craft activities, as well as circus performers and live music.

Ben Whitfield, Head of Marketing and Events at NE1 said:

We have been overwhelmed by the response to NE1’s Summer in the City events programme so far and the school summer holidays have only just begun! There are still plenty of exciting things in the pipeline. People are raving about what we’ve done on the Quayside with lots of love for our huge planters, the Wave-Field see-saws and 3D Joe & Max’s cavernous pavement art – which has taken over social media. That’s even before people have seen the new Quayside additions including Mr Penfold’s pavement vinyl and our dichroic film exhibition. Businesses and the public have been vocal about their love for the installations and we can’t wait to roll out the rest of our programme. We’re looking forward to Saturday’s pop up performances which will get the ball rolling for our summer schedule of events and activities. It is going to be a busy summer.”

“We really want to encourage people to keep coming into the city to explore and enjoy all that will be happening. This Saturday especially, with Royal Northern Sinfonia’s Sounds of Summer, everyone is welcome, whether you pull up an NE1 deckchair, a bean bag or simply catch a few minutes of music as you walk past. We hope you’ll come down to enjoy it.”

Kyra Humphreys (RNS Violinist) said: “We’re so excited for these pop-up performances that will give audiences across the North East a chance to safely enjoy live classical music, in a relaxed setting, after a year with so little live performance. Whether you’re an existing classical music fan or are new to us, we’d love you to see the orchestra perform up close and get to know our musicians better.
