Men's Health Event at NE1's Space2

In the spirit of Movember – Space 2 for young people in the heart of Newcastle is hosting a day devoted solely to Men’s Health.  On Friday 27 November, a series of workshops and information stalls focusing on different health related issues will be held from 3 - 7 pm. Specialist organisations will be on hand to offer help and advice to young men aged 13 – 18 years old on issues ranging from mental health, prostate and testicular cancer to fitness tests and general medical check ups. Street doctors; Macmillan Cancer Support and Streetwise will be among the experts staffing advice stands during the event – all of which will be free to attend. In addition to the health related activities, a series of music and DJ workshops will be on offer together with bike and woodwork sessions.  The day will also have a fun element with gaming competitions – with FIFA, darts and pool tournaments with prizes for the winners. Pam Carefull of NE1 Ltd explained: “The idea was to capitalise on Movember’s focus on men’s health and the biggest health threats facing young men especially prostrate and testicular cancer.   We hope that by combining the health sessions with fun activities all held in a non-medical environment we will reach more young people as well as raising awareness about health issues and disease prevention. “We held a similar and highly successful event for International Women’s Day back in May and we didn’t want the boys to be left out.” Jeff Hurst, YMCA Newcastle who manage Space 2 and helps deliver these events added: “Space 2 provides an ideal environment to bring serious messages direct to young people without it appearing too preachy, or threatening.  We know from similar events in the past that Friday will be well attended and we will get the message out to hundreds of young people in Newcastle as well as having some fun along the way.” For more details on the range of services Space2 provides visit www.space2.org
