IT'S COMING HOME! Newcastle's My Delhi crowned Champion of Champions at the 'Oscars of the Curry Industry'

Newcastle restaurant My Delhi has achieved its biggest triumph to date, winning the coveted Champion of Champions title at the 2026 Asian Restaurant and Takeaway Awards (ARTA).

The restaurant was first named North East Restaurant of the Year, before going on to secure the evening's highest accolade, Champion of Champions, chosen from the regional winners across the country.

The Asian Restaurant and Takeaway awards is the biggest celebration of Asian hospitality and is often referred to as “The Oscars of the curry industry!”. Over 1,250 businesses were nominated nationwide, making it a true celebration of excellence and professionalism.

ARTA uses a multi-stage process to identify its finalists and winners. Entrants were nominated by members of the public, but then judges chose the winners based on Google reviews, Tripadvisor reviews and Food Hygiene ratings.

Elahi Shah Amin, Director of My Delhi, said: “Seven years ago, we had a dream to create something different. Never did we imagine we'd be standing here as Champion of Champions. It's an enormous honour and a privilege.

“We've built a culture where everyone shares an obsession with delivering the best possible guest experience. I'm immensely proud of our incredible team, our business partners and everything we've achieved together. To bring this recognition home to the North East makes it even more special.”

Speaking on the award, Head Chef, Gaurav Dayal said, “I grew up in Delhi, and our menu is a reflection of the food, places and experiences that shaped me. It's incredibly personal to be able to share that with our guests.

“Our kitchen teams put their heart into what they do, constantly challenging themselves and refining every detail. To see their dedication recognised on a national stage is a very proud moment.”

The award comes during a significant period of growth for My Delhi. The business has expanded into Sunderland and Leicester, while 2026 saw its first acquisition, as they took over renowned Birmingham restaurant “Itihaas”. And they’re not stopping there. In 2027, we’ll see them opening the flagship My Delhi restaurant in Leeds city centre and relocating their Sunderland restaurant into a bigger premises.

To mark the historic achievement, My Delhi is planning a special Champion of Champions celebration, inviting customers and supporters to share in the success. Further details will be announced shortly.
