Great War heroes to inspire writing workshops

Local writer Rachel Cochrane is looking to Tyneside’s Great War heroes for inspiration as she prepares to host a series of creative writing workshops for members of the public this autumn. The session is to be held at the Discovery Museum, Newcastle (Wednesday 12 November). This forms part of the ‘Wor Life 1914-18, Tyne & Wear in the First World War’, Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums Heritage Lottery Funded programme of exhibitions and events to commemorate the First World War centenary. Alongside handling museum objects, attendees will reflect on poignant letters and poems sent by soldiers from the front line, using them as the inspiration for new creative writing works. The Discovery Museum  will explore the impact of World War I on life on the home front and Tyneside’s industrial contributions to the war effort. On the workshops, Rachel Cochrane said: “I feel privileged to be running creative writing sessions around these three exhibitions. “Even 100 years on, the Great War continues to fascinate and affect us all. It’s still hard to comprehend the sacrifices ordinary people made and I see writing as a profound act of commemoration for those who lived and died in that time. “Everyone is welcome to attend - previous writing experience and war knowledge are not necessary”.   The workshop runs from 10.30am to 12.30pm and cost £9.50 per session.
