First Look: Newcastle's New Christmas Time Machine Brings Festive Memories Back to Life
From the decorations we grew up with to the toys, stories and traditions shared across generations, Christmas has a remarkable ability to transport us back in time.
This winter, Northern Lights Newcastle will bring those memories to life as Leazes Park transforms into A Christmas Time Machine; a nostalgic mile-long trail through the sights, sounds and rituals of Christmases past.
A newly released trail map provides the first look at the installations set to illuminate Leazes Park when Northern Lights Newcastle returns from 20 November to 31 December 2026.
Drawing on familiar memories that make Christmas so evocative, the trail will transform much-loved toys and festive traditions into immersive light, music and interactive installations, inviting visitors of every generation to rediscover the excitement of Christmas. Visitors will enter through the Christmas Time Machine; a radiant tunnel of light where everyday life slips away and the warm glow of Christmas past begins to sparkle around them.
From sixties glow to toy-box nostalgia
Leazes Park’s most recognisable landmark will receive a groovy makeover at Lava Lamp Lane.
Molten waves of colour will ripple across the historic bandstand and spill along the surrounding path, transforming the gardens into a sixties-inspired daydream filled with lava lamp glow, vintage charm and Christmas sparkle.
Elsewhere, a giant rainbow Slinky will tumble above the trail as neon-wrapped trees spiral into the surrounding woods, while giant mirrored kaleidoscope arches shatter into swirling colour and pattern to create a dazzling nod to the classic childhood toy.
Look up and find 65 glowing, UV-lit mini cubes found twisting and shimmering among the trees as a glowing tribute to one of the world’s best-loved puzzles.
A battalion of giant nutcrackers will stand to attention at Nutcracker Salute, where illuminated commands underfoot will encourage visitors to hop, twirl, skip and jump their way through the installation.
At Disco Wonderland, this is where the party starts with a burst of colour, music and movement inviting visitors to stop, dance and soak up the festive energy before twirling onwards through the trail.
The Christmas catalogue returns!
Remember flicking through THAT catalogue with a highlighter, circling every toy on your wish list?
Young patients from the Great North Children’s Hospital will bring these pages back to life, filling them with their own brilliant interpretations and drawings of classic toys!
Meanwhile, a giant illuminated edition of The Night Before Christmas, tucked away in the woods opens to share the much-loved tale. This is where you can take a seat, settle in, and watch the pages glow to life.
Clusters of illuminated presents, oversized candy canes and an avenue of jewel-bright stained-glass panels will add to the journey, filling the paths of Leazes Park with colour.
Christmas magic is in the post
At North Pole Parcel Post, visitors will be invited to peek inside a bustling world of post boxes, workshops and an overflowing postal van, as the North Pole’s smallest workers will be seen crafting, wrapping and sorting presents ahead of the big night. Be warned… it’s quite possible you’ll spot some squabbles over which elf lost the sticky tape!

“The journey builds from playful moments of childhood nostalgia into something much more energetic. Familiar toys will appear among the trees, the historic bandstand will glow with the colour of a sixties lava lamp and Disco Wonderland will bring everyone together through light, music and movement.
“It isn’t about recreating one decade, the colourful, sociable journey has been designed for different generations to enjoy together, with moments that will take adults back to their own Christmases while still feeling fresh and surprising for younger visitors.
“One of the most special elements is the Christmas catalogue created with young patients from the Great North Children’s Hospital. Their drawings bring together memory’s adults have of choosing their dream presents with the imagination of children today.
“We hope everyone discovers something that makes them smile, sparks a memory or gets them dancing along the way.”
Northern Lights Newcastle will also feature a Christmas Village filled with seasonal food and drink, vintage fairground rides and places to warm up before and after the trail.
Dedicated neuro-inclusive evenings on Wednesday 2nd and Wednesday 9th December where visitor numbers will be reduced by 75%, with lower audio levels throughout the trail to create a calmer environment.
The fully accessible, mile-long route will once again feature wheelchair-friendly paths, ramp access points and seating areas throughout, alongside Access time slots and queue jump wristbands for visitors with additional needs.
Tickets start from £19.50 for adults and £13.50 for children (plus £1.75 transaction fee per booking). Free flexible booking allows customers to change their chosen date or time up to 24 hours before their visit.
