EVERYTHING IS AWESOME IN MUST-SEE EXHIBITION FOR FANS OF LEGO

It has enthralled children and adults for over 50 years and on average, every person on earth owns 94 pieces but one man’s love of it has led him to build an entire exhibition using nothing but LEGO….and its coming to Newcastle. Brick City, an exhibition made entirely out of LEGO bricks is coming to Newcastle’s Life Science Centre this weekend (8 March 2014). The exhibition is a celebration of some of the world’s most iconic landmarks and features over 70 models built by professional ‘artist in LEGO bricks’, Warren Elsmore from his internationally-acclaimed book Brick City: LEGO for grown-ups.   Highlights will include miniature versions of the Arc de Triomphe (complete with tiny cyclists), Buckingham Palace featuring the Royal Family waving after the wedding of William and Kate and the Trevi Fountain.   Also featured are famous events such as the Rio Carnival and the London Olympics. One of the key pieces in the exhibition is a miniature version of St Pancras Station and Hotel which shows details such as commuters running down escalators and a guest in a hotel bath. It contains 180,000 bricks and is 5ft tall and took 37 year old Warren 500 hours to build.  He said: “This is one of my personal favourites and was a real labour of love.  I’ve been a LEGO fan for as long as I can remember so to be able to create this exhibition is a dream come true.  I hope it inspires visitors to dig out their LEGO and see where their imagination takes them.” As well as the LEGO models, the exhibition will include a hands-on section where visitors can have a go at recreating one of their own favourite buildings or delve into their imagination and build something entirely new. Ian Simmons, Director of Science Communications at Life said: “LEGO has been a favourite toy for generations and is currently benefitting from a huge resurgence with the arrival of The LEGO Movie.  The magic of LEGO is its universal appeal, its versatility and the creativity it inspires - something which is certainly evident in Brick City – the models are fascinating and really make you appreciate the stunning architecture of the famous buildings Warren has so meticulously recreated.” Brick City will be at Life Science Centre from 8 March to 12 April.   Entrance to the exhibition is included in Life’s admission price.
