DR. MARTENS PUTS ITS FOOT DOWN IN NEWCASTLE

NEWCASTLE’S retail scene gains a further boost this week with British footwear and clothing label Dr. Martens opening a new store in Newcastle on 4th September. The 1000sq ft retail outlet at the top of Grainger Street is Dr. Martens first standalone store in the city, following recent store openings in Brighton and Edinburgh. Amy Nelson, UK Retail Marketing Manager at Dr. Martens, said Newcastle’s coal to culture history was the “perfect match” for the brand, noting the local people enjoyed “a rebellious nature and an independent style”. She added: “The new store will be located near the Monument, a fashion district with excellent footfall and a place of self expression and protest, which is perfect for Dr. Martens.” Dr. Martens will be a welcome addition to Newcastle’s high street offering and fashion leaders in the city are already anticipating the new arrival will be well-received. NE1’s Newcastle Fashion Week organiser Sandra Tang said: “The brand is synonymous with the city’s independent fashion, music, social and cultural landscape so I think there will be as many new young fans adopting the footwear as there will be life-long Dr. Martens wearers welcoming it to Newcastle.” Stephen Patterson, director of communications at the Business Improvement District for Newcastle City Centre, Newcastle NE1, said: “It’s fantastic news that Dr. Martens has decided to invest in Newcastle as part of its rollout of UK stores and that particular spot on Grainger Street is a perfect position. “Dr. Martens will also further boost the area around Grey’s Monument which is currently undergoing a renaissance with the development of Monument Mall and opening of new restaurants, so it is exciting times for the heart of Newcastle’s city centre.” The store will feature the full range of footwear, clothing and accessories from Dr. Martens including the new A/W13 range and the upcoming Agyness Deyn for Dr. Martens AW13 collaboration collection due to launch at the end of September.
