Discovery Museum’s First Ever Event Where Toddlers Take over the Museum

Discovery Museum’s first ever Toddler Takeover is on Wednesday 14 September for young children aged between 3 and 5 and their carers, from 10am to 12.30pm.
It’s a chance for families with young children to explore the museum in ways they’ve never experienced before. Tickets cost £2.75 plus booking fee per toddler. Accompanying babies and adults go free.
Amy Baird, Assistant Learning Officer at Discovery Museum, said: “This is the first Toddler Takeover we’ve had at Discovery Museum. Previous Takeover events at the Great North Museum: Hancock were very popular so we thought we’d invite families to have the same experience at Discovery Museum which has very different themes and displays.
“I’m really looking forward to seeing how our smallest visitors enjoy themselves and get involved with all the activities.”
The museum’s dedicated learning team will set up several activities across the whole of the first floor of the museum from sensory play and dressing up, sorting and counting to building and constructing. Toddlers will get to handle museum objects and make their own train driver’s hat too.
To make sure children get the most out of their visit, the learning team will be supported by learning colleagues from different museums and art galleries across the Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums (TWAM) group - Great North Museum: Hancock, Stephenson Steam Railway, Laing Art Gallery , Shipley Art Gallery and South Shields Museum & Art Gallery. Friends from the National Literacy Trust will also be at the event.
Tickets should be booked for every member of the group attending – accompanying adults and babies go free but still need to book – and entry time will be staggered throughout the morning. Adults will be given a leaflet with activity information on to guide their child or children through.
The museum recommends spending one hour exploring the different activities at your own pace. Participants can take part in as many, or as few, activities as they like, and in any order.
Discovery Museum has plenty of space and is highly accessible. With three floors of galleries to explore it is just a short walk from Central Station in Newcastle. People hoping to park may find the Pay & Display car parking immediately outside the museum fills up very quickly, however there is the Grainger Town multi-storey car park located on Waterloo Street (opposite side of St. James' Boulevard to Discovery Museum).
