Discovery Museum gets creative for the Urban Games

Discovery Museum goes street this Saturday (10 August, 11am-3pm) with a series of activities to celebrate the launch of The Urban Games 2013 festival in Newcastle. This event will see visitors get to grips with a series of urban challenges including graffiti painting with local artist Tommy Anderson. The free event, which is in partnership with the Globe Gallery, will be sound tracked by the rhythm of the steel drums. Visitors will be able to create their own beats with the help of talented drummer Nik Alevroyiannis. There will also be a series of performances throughout the day, both vocal and dance, by young people taking part in the Urban Games. The festival is now in its fourth year and hosts a number of events around Newcastle, including Free Running competitions, break dance competitions and Flatland BMX battles. Hazel Edwards, Museum Manager, Discovery Museum, said: “The Urban Games have become a great way of highlighting the often hidden talents of young people in the North East. Discovery Museum is proud to be able to provide the platform for these inspirational young people and we would encourage people of all ages to come along and be wowed.” Tommy Anderson said: “It’s great that these forms of artistic expression are being celebrated in this way as an important part of youth culture. These activities are often ignored or are seen in a negative light, so it’s fantastic that they are being showcased as forms of creative expression among young people. I’m looking forward to helping visitors get to grips with the art of spray painting and showing just how many different styles of art can be created. ” Jigsaw Entertainment will be on hand with face painting and fun for younger visitors. This free event takes place on Saturday, 10 August 2013, 11am-3pm. All are welcome. For more information visit: www.discoverymuseum.org.uk
