From the classroom to the catwalk: Eldon Square to showcase Newcastle’s next generation of designers
Shoppers in Newcastle will be able to discover the city’s next generation of creative talent this year, as Eldon Square launches “Future Heritage” – a bold new project celebrating local designers through fashion, culture and live experiences across the centre.
Created in partnership with Newcastle College and Fenwick, around 80 students will bring bold fashion pieces and textiles to life as they design stunning garments and surface textiles inspired by Newcastle’s heritage and Eldon Square’s 50th anniversary.
Adding to the excitement, the work is then being judged by a panel of industry experts and local figures including Fenwick’s Store Director Kieran McBride, Eldon Square’s Centre Director Helen Cowie, Libby Lagun, Head of Curriculum for Art and Design at Newcastle College, and even representatives from the iconic leading fashion body: the British Fashion Council.
The first stage of judging has already taken place for the surface print designs, with a shortlist set to be revealed soon – giving shoppers an early glimpse of the standout talent emerging from the project.
The winning designer will see their creation take centre stage in Fenwick Newcastle, with a dedicated window display in one of the city’s most iconic retail landmarks. Sitting proudly in the heart of the city centre, the showcase will give shoppers a first look at Newcastle’s next big creative talent, turning everyday browsing into a moment of discovery.
The project will culminate in a major public fashion show this September at the highly anticipated Freight Island venue – set to become one of the city’s must-see cultural moments of the year. Visitors will be able to experience the final designs live, as emerging talent takes to the runway in a celebration of Newcastle’s creativity.
Helen Cowie, Centre Director at Eldon Square, said:
“Newcastle has always been a city full of creativity, character and pride, and Future Heritage brings that to life for everyone visiting Eldon Square. It’s a chance for shoppers to discover something new, see incredible local talent up close and be part of celebrating the city’s next generation of designers. We’re proud to be working with Newcastle College and Fenwick to create an experience that puts Newcastle creativity centre stage.”
Jon Ridley, Principal of Newcastle College, added:
“Future Heritage is giving our students at Newcastle College the professional standards, confidence and understanding of creative practice, and how this translates into a commercial setting. Experiences like these are invaluable in preparing students for careers in the creative industries.”
With more moments set to be revealed throughout the year, Future Heritage will continue to bring new energy into Eldon Square – giving visitors fresh reasons to return, discover something new and celebrate the city’s creativity.
