Andrew Smyth, finalist in Great British Bake Off, heads to Maker Faire UK

Finalist of Great British Bake Off comes to Newcastle!!

Andrew Smyth, a finalist in 2016’s Great British Bake Off, will be cooking up a storm as one of the headliners of Maker Faire UK at the Centre for Life in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Maker Faire UK, a two-day celebration of hacking, crafting, coding, DIY and garden shed inventing, will be held on 1 and 2 April 2017. This year’s festival has an extra sweet surprise for avid Bake Off fans, as Andrew Smyth – who wowed audiences on the TV show with his engineering-themed creations – will be showing how creative you can be when baking.

Andrew, an aerospace engineer at Rolls Royce, said: "I'm thrilled to be taking part in Maker Faire UK at the Centre for Life. Having previously been to some smaller maker events in my home town of Derby, I love the creativity and ingenuity that's on show and how it can encourage others to get making. It will be my first ever trip to Newcastle, which means there is even more for me to discover!"

Visitors will be able to see the star baking live in our own tent* – just like on the show! – on both the Saturday and Sunday, where he will be creating a bake with a special science twist. On-stage cameras will capture the action and stream to a large screen behind, ensuring that the whole audience will be able to see the intricacies of Andrew’s handiwork.

He will also be letting the audience into some of his baking secrets, explaining how he created his most famous engineering-themed bakes: the cog wheel pies that wowed Bake Off viewers, and a replica of the rotating propeller section of the turbine engine cake that he presented to Prince William during a visit to Rolls Royce in November.

Each show will last about 30 minutes and there will be three shows per day. (Please check the programme on the day for times.)  Between demonstrations, visitors can marvel at his beautiful creations up-close. Lucky visitors may also have the opportunity to meet Andrew, who will be manning his stand when he is not enjoying a well-deserved rest!

Linda Conlon, Chief Executive at the Centre for Life, added: “We are thrilled to have Andrew join us. His baking skills will add a different facet to what is already a truly eclectic event. He is sure to feel right at home in the bustling, quirky, creative atmosphere – we’ve even found him a tent to bake in!”
