Create, build, play, learn and share as the UKs largest celebration of invention and creativity returns to Newcastle

Open call for the nations biggest gathering of Makers

The world-famous Maker Faire will return to Newcastles Centre for Life on 26 & 27 April 2014 and everyone - from roboteers and engineers to crafters, hackers and garden shed inventors - is invited to take part. Maker Faire UK is a family-friendly showcase of invention, creativity and resourcefulness, and a celebration of the world-wide Maker movement.  A place where people show what they are making and share what they are learning, helping a curious public understand how science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) shapes the world around them. The event at Life will be the UKs official Maker Faire and is set to attract Makers from across the world keen to present their interactive projects alongside performances, installations and workshops to an anticipated audience of over 10,000 visitors. Announcing the Call for Makers, Event Manager, Sheela Joy said: Were looking for amazing work of all kinds and from makers of all ages - anyone who is embracing the do-it-yourself spirit and wants to share and show their incredible inventions, hobbies, products, and DIY mentality with an appreciative audience. She added: We particularly encourage exhibits that are interactive and that highlight the process of making things.  From robotics, electronics and gaming to arts and crafts, and everything in between, Maker Faire UK 2014 is the perfect platform to share your home-grown design, project or product. We encourage entries from the North East as theres such a wealth of hidden talent people doing things in their spare time that would be of great interest to our audience. Part science fair, part county fair, and part something entirely new, Maker Faires are popular across the world.  They originated in the US in 2006 when Make Magazine co-founder Dale Dougherty created the first Faire in California offering tech enthusiasts, crafters, scientists and garage tinkerers a platform to show examples of their work and interact with others about it.  Previous years Maker Faires at Life have seen fire-breathing mechanical horses, Rubiks cube-playing robots and musicians playing giant tesla coils. Linda Conlon, Chief Executive of the Centre for Life, said: Maker Faire is imaginative, creative and importantly, its inspirational.  People get the chance to experience great creative design, science, art, craft and manufacturing from hundreds of enthusiastic people all in one place!  We know that Maker Faire inspires young people to launch projects, develop products and some even take up careers in Science and Technology and I would urge anyone who has innovative and exciting new projects get involved. To participate in Maker Faire UK, Makers need to submit their plans for a project at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/SubmitYourProjectMakerFaireUK2014   Makers may submit their entry as a maker, performer, speaker, or sponsor.  Applications are open to individuals, groups, schools and other organisations.  Deadline for submissions is Midnight, Sunday 19 January 2014. Tickets to attend Maker Faire UK 2014 will go on sale at the end of November, available to purchase from the Centre for Life or at www.MakerFaireUK.com Maker Faire UK is independently organized and operated under license from Maker Media, Inc., and is presented by the Centre for Life with support from Northumbria and Newcastle Universities.
